Violence is a broad concept that goes well beyond just excessive physical force to include abusive exercise of power, coercion and cruelty. I had already said I was talking about a very subtle form of violence so I do not think it is reasonable to conclude that I am making comparison with rape or the criminal battery of children.

The idea about the nature of violence comes from Slavoj Zizek (I don’t remember the details). Too controversial – dropped. But it is general enough, I think, to include anything that puts someone else down or “in their place”. While I want to be respectful I also want to be able to approach difficult and challenging subjects.

They need to move in two directions at once. Interfaith dialogue will build mutual understanding and break down prejudices. And they need to get God out of politics and the state whether Muslim, Jewish or Christian. Once everyone has equal rights in modern secular states like the U.S. or Europe, things will improve. A theocracy will not get along with anyone else.

In that case, would you say that Jesus had a political message, and if so, what was it? I had a quick search for this topic and I see that John Howard Yoder wrote a book on the subject “The Politics of Jesus”.

Are Christians supposed to be engaged with the world politically or should they be minding their own business and waiting quietly to be raptured off the planet?
