Originally posted by JimL View PostThe stormtroopers were sent to Portland on July 4th, and I don't recall any attacks on the federal courthouse prior to that. Perhaps you have evidence to the contrary. At any rate, there is no doubt that the violence has excalated, not subsided, since the stormtroopers arrived, and that is all in accord with the authoritarians plan.
If you're claiming that federal troops showed up on July 4th, this is AFTER violence was already occurring, and early that morning (4 AM, and the night before) the protesters were launching commercial grade fireworks, and had already been committing arson.
Source is Portland Channel 6 (KOIN) - there had already been 3 weeks of riot prior to that.
For the 3rd time this week, a riot was declared in downtown Portland when the Hatfield Federal Courthouse was attacked around 4 a.m. on the 4th of July.
The area around the Federal Courthouse remained an active situation for a time, authorities said. But by 6 a.m., the area seemed much more calm with a group of about 15 people dancing.
The incidents began when some demonstrators launched commercial grade fireworks from the spot where the Elk Statue was (until it was removed earlier this week after damage from protester-set fires.) Then around 11 p.m. Friday demonstrators from the Justice Center marched to Waterfront Park, then back again 45 minutes later to the area of SW 3rd and Salmon and Madison, police said.
Shortly before 1 a.m., protesters began throwing rocks at the Federal Courthouse and then firing commercial grade fireworks toward the Justice Center
Not that the "Friday" referenced above would be the day before you claim federal officers arrived. The first to state his case seems right until another comes and cross-examines him.

Originally posted by Starlight View PostThe vast, vast, vast majority of the BLM protests taking place across the US appear to be peaceful. That is great.
There have been a few instances of violence, and we seem to keep finding out that this is being carried out by white supremacists who have snuck in to try and foment violence. Unfortunately there is a long history of this in the US where right-wing groups try to subvert peaceful leftist protest (Cointelpro etc). Obviously violence is bad and we condemn it when it occurs and condemn those doing it, just as with any other crimes. Obviously it's a side issue and doesn't take away from the main issues which are around the police use of violence, lack of police disciplinary measures and accountability, the humane treatment of suspects in custody, and racial issues around policing.
But what's not helping is that Trump and Barr are lying to the American public, and unfortunately the gullible like CP are believing them, that the protesters are all a bunch of "violent anarchists" etc, which obviously couldn't be further from the truth. It's kinda sad how naive people are in believing that, even people who would otherwise agree that nothing much Trump says can be trusted.

This is exactly the result of what I meant a few days back in reference to how the MSM's reporting gives an extremely inaccurate impression. When they are pushed into admitting that they are attacking police and such, nearly all of them mention anything more than throwing bottles and trash cans as well as shooting fireworks. That presents a rather innocuous, but false, picture.
Most folks today think of plastic bottles and bottle rockets or maybe Roman candles. In fact, the police report being peppered with "large rocks, full cans, and bottles" propelled by slingshots -- which can easily reach bone-breaking and lethal velocities. And the fireworks are "commercial grade fireworks and mortars" which are light leagues away from bottle rockets and the like.
I'm always still in trouble again

More from the article I cited, for which I may have failed to include a link (but nobody asked )
Riot declared as Federal Courthouse attacked in Portland
violence and vandalism on our streetsthreatening the safety of hundreds of inmates and employees inside. They continue to hurt small businesses owned by people of color, instill fear in communities of color, and start fires in buildings with people inside,
Note that's not some right winger talking, it's the idiot mayor who showed up to show solidarity with the nice 'peaceful protesters', and he was shouted down and run off by them.
ETA: Hey, I have a wonderful idea!!! Let's send JimL to Portland to have a nice little sit-down with these peaceful protesters!!!The first to state his case seems right until another comes and cross-examines him.
