Both were military powers and they certainly spent most of the 1700s fighting one another. However, I would contend that following various British naval blockades, the loss of French colonies, and the disaster of the Seven Years War that by the 1770s the British had naval superiority, but I am not a naval [or military] historian.

As I remarked above I am not a military historian but that would depend on what aspects of military technology [and associated technologies] you are discussing. I think the Chinese and the Russians between them probably have enough nuclear warheads to ensure global annihilation if that was ever embarked upon.

There are also other ways to undermine one's enemy, as has been evidenced by various cyber attacks.

My point was really made to illustrate the fact that without the military and financial aid from a world power [France], thirteen rebel colonies would most likely not have defeated Britain.

Another rather nasty bit of information associated with Trump's personal police force is that they tend to be associated with DHS. Why is that important? Because trump has purged the DHS of appointees that were vetted by the Senate and placed his own men in there stead in 'acting' capacity. What's the big deal? Acting capacity is a 'temporary' status that does not need senate approval or oversite.

Now, trump has been able to, yet again, to do an end run around the separation of powers. His personal police force reports to people Trump appointed without any sort of vetting or approval outside himself. People whose temporary status means if they dont make Trump happy he pulls them and plops another person that will in their place.

Again, a major abuse of power, and a situation that does, in fact, make these forces in fact "Trump's personal police force".

The US army is never meant to be a domestic force. This is to keep the power of the presidency from wielding military or police power against us citizens. That authority is granted to the states and local governments.

This is an end run around that

Jim, if the mayor of Portland refuses to protect the Federal buildings (as they refuse to protect other buildings and businesses) what should we do? Allow the mob to destroy these buildings? Is that what you are advocating?
