Because you idiots don't want border security. You want that money to go to hiring judges to get asylum seekers through the door faster, and again, ready made votes. Just more prostitution.

Because they were not going to budge, and to hell with the government workers in the process. Trump obviously cares more for them than Pelosi.

Ummm... that doesn't explain why Trump took their $1.3B offer and never said a word about taking their $5.7B "compromise" offer.

This was what Trump was apparently a bit concerned about. The shutdown took his numbers down by about 7 percentage points (they've rebounded just a tad since). Pelosi's numbers climbed by about 10 percentage points and have been holding.

It will be interesting to see what happens if there is another shutdown

Though I do believe that Trump would be stupid enough to shut down the government again, I doubt that even his stupid advisers would be stupid enough to allow him to do it again. He can try to go the "National Emergency" route, but I doubt any court is going to buy that nonsense. So, the "art of the deal" genius already blew it, Pelosi kicked his butt, and whatever the compromise bill ends up being, he'll be on the losing end of it as far as his nutty base is concerned. Long live speaker Pelosi!

Aw, too bad Bill, we all know who the hostage taker was and whose butt got kicked by Pelosi and made to release them without collecting any ransom. Democracy will win out in the end over the tyrant.

Trump was the one to realize that people needed their paychecks. Ayatollah Pelosi and Sheik Schumer acted just like the good little terrorists and held the furloughed workers hostage in order to make sure Trump couldn't shut off their steady flow of illegal future voters.

Democracy will win out in the end over the tyrant.
Democrats are socialists. And I'm sure Trump will win out over the two tyrant pimps.

Trump may be a vile man, but I don't think he's stupid. I doubt any of his advisers are stupid. I don't see the purpose of labeling people we disagree with "stupid." If history tells us anything, it is that Trump does not march to the tune of his advisers. So the possibility of a second shutdown seems fairly real.

I think you forget the degree to which the courts have swung to the right in the last two years, most notably SCOTUS. If he does this and it goes to the courts, it almost certainly will end up before SCOTUS (I can't imagine either side letting it go at a lower court, can you?). SCOTUS leans right now, and is strongly literate. The National Emergencies Act has not been ruled unconstitutional for any emergency since it was passed, and gives the president broad powers. I imagine SCOTUS is highly likely to vote in favor of Trump. Trump's problem with this route is time (as someone else noted previously). However, other cases have been expedited through the courts (e.g., the travel ban, etc.), so I imagine, if he goes this route, it could be resolved this year.

Trump's other problem is the impact on the funds he would tap under this emergency declaration. Those funds are earmarked for other things and would be diverted. Depending on which funds he diverts, he runs the risk of alienating those who will be deprived of those funds. One major source is the U.S. Military.

There is no question in my mind that Trump caved, and Pelosi schooled him on the concept of "co-equal" branches of government. It remains to be seen if she overplays her hand. So far, so good. She has followed through and re-invited him to give the SOTU while showing that she controls the time and place. So far- a reasonable balance.

As for "nutty base," again, I do not see any purpose to labeling his entire base "nutty." While I think they are very narrowly focused and they are compromising many things to continue to support a man like Trump, I have no reason to think they are "nutty." Their objectives are not mine. Their degree of devotion is not mine. The anger that led to that support, however, is something I understand. The Dems dropped the ball badly - and Trump picked it up and ran it in for a win. I find it sad and disappointing that so much of our country "approves" of this vile man, and will not call him to account for his behavior and words. But I don''t think they are "nutty."
