Politifact: Did Obama say he didn't have the right to issue DACA? Mostly False. They note:
- When Obama spoke about his ability to affect immigration laws, he consistently said he couldn't simply overrule congress, but that he could do selective enforcement. Conservatives tend to selectively quote Obama saying the first part about how he can't overrule congress but leave out the parts where he said there was scope for Presidential action.
- Obama was always vague on what selective enforcement was and wasn't within the prerogative of the president on this issue.
- DACA does, however, take the notion of selective enforcement to a whole new level that Obama didn't really hint at prior to it.
- DACA wasn't an Executive Order, it was a Department of Homeland Security policy.
So overall they rate Trump's claim that Obama said he couldn't do DACA as mostly false. He never said he couldn't do it, he merely said that his hands were tied somewhat on the matter and that he had some flexibility on immigration but not heaps. Nowhere did he ever say anything like "the specific DACA policies you are suggesting I do would be beyond the legal scope of the presidency". And, even if he had, people are allowed to change their mind on issues! Courts and legal experts remain divided to this day about the constitutionality of DACA, so if Obama himself thought that was the absolute limit of his own ability to act on the matter, it would seem he was probably right.Last edited by Starlight; 05-27-2018, 04:05 AM."I hate him passionately", he's "a demonic force" - Tucker Carlson, in private, on Donald Trump

So what is specifically incorrect in the article Starlight linked to? This is what I expressed concern about in a post the other day - people reflexively saying "fake news" without saying what's actually untrue, and often people saying this are simply wrong, so I tend not to uncritically believe "fake news" claims."I am not angered that the Moral Majority boys campaign against abortion. I am angry when the same men who say, "Save OUR children" bellow "Build more and bigger bombers." That's right! I find their final verdict on the truth/falsity tends to bend over backwards to be extra-favorable to conservatives and extra-harsh on liberals though. I have seen them pretty much admit that they do this to try and come across as 'fair and balanced' to conservatives."I hate him passionately", he's "a demonic force" - Tucker Carlson, in private, on Donald Trump

In my experience, PolitiFact is actually generally accurate when it comes to the information in their articles (even if, very frequently, they're quite skewed in the presentation of that information), but they're quite biased towards liberals when it comes to their final verdicts, which of course is all that a lot of people bother reading.
