  • The fact that Stephanopoulos saw a need to bail Obama out speaks volumes.

The fact that Stephanopolous cut in before the sentence was finished, misunderstanding what Obama was saying, and was then corrected by Obama says everything.

But you're not going to see that; you're too committed to the "Obama is Muslim" conspiracy theory. Given the nature of your reading material, MM, it's not really surprising.

Since this discussion is way past pointless - I'll leave the last word to you.

Oh, I don't think he misunderstood him at all. The fact that Obama so effortlessly delivered that phrase says quite a lot, and Stephanopolous saw that Obama wasn't going to correct himself on his own and threw him a much needed lifeline. You keep trying to interpret what Obama might have meant while flatly ignoring what he actually said.

Obama wasn't claiming to be a muslim - that's clear from context. It is telling that Stephanopolis steps in - he's either not paying attention or afraid of the statement (probably both). That Obama uses a phrase 'effortlessly' tells us only that he speaks English well.

The exchange doesn't come close to indicating that Obama is a muslim - you might want to reconsider using it as evidence of such since that interpretation makes your argument look ridiculous even to those sympathetic to the possibility.

It was just a curious slip up is all, and Stephanopolous jumping in with a save was curious as well. It clearly spooked him that Obama might have admitted something he shouldn't have. Personally, I don't have any opinion one way or the other about what religion Obama might be. He's no longer president, thank God, so it's largely irrelevant at this point.

                    • In a display of typical liberal cluelessness, Conan O'Brien visits a high-priced, private resort in Haiti and declares it a beautiful country.

People were quick to respond to his Tweet pointing out that if he walked just a few miles beyond those idyllic hills in the background then he would come face to face with the real Haiti with its stifling poverty and crime rate that can only be described as horrific, and which looks nothing like the exclusive resort he chose to stay at which likely costs more to visit for a day than the average Haitian makes in a year.

                      Alternatively...

Haiti IS a beautiful country. Have you ever been?

It's also a badly impoverished country struggling with corruption, and it has some remote areas that are sorely in need. My brother launched a nonprofit and has devoted the last several years to helping the people of the Bayonnaise valley (several villages, about 11K people) to build up their own infrastructure and become more self-sustaining. Because of their erosion control, reforestation, and farming education efforts (as well as food support in the recent drought, aid in building educational infrastructure, development of medical infrastructure, and water reclamation projects), the valley has ridden through the last two hurricanes with far less impact than much of the rest of the island.

Anyone who would like to contribute to a group that is actually making a difference (and 100% of the donated money goes to their charitable efforts, which are generally engineered to be self-sustaining - usually using local labor and resources. No one draws a salary and even volunteers have to pay their own way to get to Haiti), you can find the organization here: http://www.nfoh.org

PARTS of Haiti are beautiful. I have been there on numerous mission trips, and am still involved with mission efforts there, both medical and educational. There are many places that were, at one time, quite luxurious.
The first to state his case seems right until another comes and cross-examines him.

Yes, you're right. There are some parts of Haiti that are pure hellholes, and parts I would never walk through without an armed escort.

But then the same is true of pretty much any country. Parts of the U.S., are beautiful. Then there are parts that are hellholes I would not walk through without an armed escort.

Yes... provided you have the money to stay at a gated resort with its own private beach, ample security, and drinks served in coconut shells.

Have you been there, MM? I suspect the answer to that is, "no," or you would not be posting such an obviously uninformed comment.

Much of Haiti is absolutely gorgeous. It is in some of those areas that resorts tend to build, but Hatian beauty is not limited to resort areas. There are also very ugly areas where poverty and crime and taken their toll, as with all countries. Haiti has a disproportionate amount of the latter, especially in and around urban areas.
