  • As somebody who is probably more open to socialistic policies than anyone else on the mod staff, I don't have any time for the quote. It's anachronistic because the idea of socialism wasn't around at the time of Jesus.
"I am not angered that the Moral Majority boys campaign against abortion. I am angry when the same men who say, "Save OUR children" bellow "Build more and bigger bombers." That's right! Blast the children in other nations into eternity, or limbless misery as they lay crippled from "OUR" bombers! This does not jell." - Leonard Ravenhill

Seriously, though, I was hoping you had better judgment than that. Neither side tends to come out well when attempting to politicize Jesus IMO.

Seriously though, OBP, you are assuming that "liking" is equivalent to "agreeing." I am making no comment about the quote's political or historical accuracy. I simply think the quote is a creative turn of phrase, so I like it. I leave what Jesus did or did not "actually/historically" stand for to others. I find engaging in "what Jesus meant" discussions/arguments to be largely pointless and usually endless. I limit myself to "what it means to me."

That is the general assumption, yes. You're free for it to mean something else in your head, but it's disingenuous of you to complain when people assume the common meaning.

OK. That made me seriously wonder. Here is the Webster's definition of like. I'm not seeing anything that has to do with agreement for the context of the word as I used it. The only place I see it having anything to do with "agreement" is when you say something is "like" something else. YThen one can argue there is "agreement" between the two things being compared.

I can appreciate the form and structure of an argument without agreeing with it's conclusions. That is what I meant when I said I "liked" the signature. I thought it was a creative turn of phrase. I have no opinion on Jesus' politics.

I have to admit I find that entire dynamic a bit confounding.

I think I can see what carpe is saying. For example, I've seen some memes mocking Christians or libertarians that I thought were funny even though I had major issues with the statement. So I can see him liking the "cleverness" of the quote while disagreeing with its content.

That said, I think the quote is dumb and the whole "Jesus was a socialist" thing is beyond ridiculous.

Yeah he was actually a pirate. He talked constantly about hiding treasure and he sailed on the sea of Galilee.

I'm trying to think of an example, but like being in a group of people suddenly I forgot all the jokes I know....

True, but arguing that "liking" something doesn't usually mean that you also agree with it is just silliness, I mean, obviously it doesn't always mean that, but that's typically the implication. Digging up the dictionary definition, as though he doesn't know how people talk is definitely eyeroll-y behavior.

Just remember the punchline - you can always construct the joke to get there.

This is satire, so not really the same, but a good example might be this Babylon Bee article, which caricaturizes the Calvinism/Arminianism debate. The things it says about Arminianism are wrong (deliberately so, hence satire), but funny.
