New Jan. 6 Details Emerge From 20,000 Hours of Newly Released Video

A few things I'll note up front - that the videos often show the protesters as more violent than many had claimed. As I have said consistently, anybody who broke the law that day should be arrested and prosecuted, but not beyond what is usual and customary for similar protester crimes.

An interesting (to me) account is that it is pretty well established that Lt. Byrd flat out lied about being fired upon and returning fire.

Police Swarm Capitol

An immediate effect of the fatal shooting was a swarming police presence in and around the Capitol, security video showed. Mr. Byrd made a radio report after he shot Ms. Babbitt at 2:44 p.m., claiming that he was under fire and was preparing to return fire. That was never true.

Note - the radio report was AFTER he shot Babbitt, and was a demonstrably false report, causing an increased tension among police that they would encounter "shots fired".

Mr. Babbitt’s lawsuit alleges that the false radio report, which was never corrected or retracted, created a dangerous situation in the Capitol since responding officers had no idea if there were armed rioters loose. In truth, Mr. Byrd’s shot was the only gun fired and no officers were confronted with guns or gunfire.

Security video showed the anxiety and fear on the faces of police officers who moved through the Capitol with weapons drawn.

The fatal shooting of 35-year-old Ms. Babbitt received no attention from the Jan. 6 committee.

While the shooting itself was captured on video only by bystanders in the hallway outside the Speaker’s Lobby, security video showed efforts by FBI medics, Capitol Police tactical officers, and paramedics to save Ms. Babbitt’s life.

As rioting raged in the Speaker’s Lobby hallway just after 2:40 p.m., it seemed virtually no one noticed Lt. Michael Byrd slip out from his hidden position with his Glock pistol aimed at the dozens of people just feet to his right.

That is a point I have made repeatedly - that Byrd was hiding, and ducking in and out of cover, not knowing anything about what was happening on the other side of the doors.

Ms. Babbitt spent her few minutes in the hallway trying to keep the crowd from spiraling further into mob behavior. The former Air Force military police officer shouted at three Capitol Police officers to “call [expletive] help” before she used a left hook to sideline rioter Zachary Alam for smashing several windows.

This is new information.

Mr. Byrd lunged forward and fired a single shot at Ms. Babbitt as she attempted to climb through a broken-out side panel of the Speaker’s Lobby entrance. The shooting, which was never announced as an officer-involved incident on the Capitol Police radio, sent would-be rescuers toward the Capitol’s South Door.

And Byrd flat out lied about it in an attempt to cover his butt, apparently not realizing there would eventually be video released showing him to be both a coward and a liar.

After that clown show allowed the freakishly bizarre claim that OMB was in a knockdown drag out with the Secret Service as he tried to seize control of the steering wheel of the vehicle he was in, to go completely unchecked, in spite of those involved clamoring to be allowed to testify to refute that strange fantasy, I truly cannot see how anyone could take anything they did seriously.

I can see with clarity now why all this was so traumatizing to the poor cops.

So, brief recap regarding Lt. Byrd...

• The ONLY person to die on Jan6 as a direct result of the riot was an unarmed female military veteran.
• The officer who shot her was in civilian clothes, and had been disciplined prior for mishandling his firearm.
• Lt. Byrd was seen earlier in chambers handling his duty weapon in such a way as to put his protectees in danger.
• There is no evidence whatsoever (even with new official video) that Byrd identified himself as a police officer, or even made himself known.
• There is no evidence whatsoever (even with new official video) that Byrd issued any warnings whatsoever that he was about to use deadly force.
• It is clear that there was no way for Byrd to know anything that was going on on the other side of the doors.
• There was no way for Byrd to know that Babbitt had actually tried to oppose the rioters.
• There is no evidence that anybody else (in the hall where Byrd was hiding) was there, much less in imminent danger.
• It is clear that Byrd made a false report on the police radio that shots had been fired, and he was returning fire - an outright demonstrable lie.

Those are the facts and they are not in dispute.

Pretty much all of the defense of Byrd from posters here depended on unsupported allegations that he announced himself and yelled warnings, "but they weren't recorded".
Truth is, the newer official video shows that to be absolutely implausible.
The very fact that Byrd made a false report by police radio that shots had been fired and he had to return fire - what other motive could there possibly be than covering his own butt?
