Read the book of Romans. Paul deals with your objection, starting in chapter 5 and 6.

It goes to what we used to call "fire insurance" - people "getting saved" to escape hell.
Then we go into "easy believism" where somebody just 'repeats some words' - like Joel Osteen proffers at the end of his false gospel sessions.

What Jesus focused on in the NT was the motivation behind the deeds, where the OT seemed to focus more on the deeds themselves - sacrifices, rituals, ceremonies.

I've known men, for example, who "got saved" just to get their wife to quit nagging them about their eternal destiny.

It's like, to me, people taking the Ephesians 2:8-9 thing and ignoring the 10th verse. We are saved to do good works, we do not do good works to be saved.
