Where is the "broadly speaking" in the statement that: "I am being investigated for firing the FBI Director[...]" It appears rather specific.

And again was the original statement fake news or not?

Here's what the President had to say specifically about the the Washington Compost story:

"They made up a phony collusion with the Russians story, found zero proof, so now they go for obstruction of justice on the phony story. Nice"
The man who told Trump to fire Comey, or at least wrote the memo suggesting he be fired, was deputy Atty Gen. R. Rosenstein, not Mueller. I can only guess by this that Trump is upset with Rosenstein for breaking under the pressure and bringing on a special prosecutor. Maybe he will fire Rosenstein next if Rosenstein refuses to fire Mueller. At any rate, even your hero himself recognizes that its not fake news. Trump is under investigation for obstruction of justice and or abuse of power and that opens the door to any and all things connecting Trump with the collusion investigation, including his financial dealings with Russia.

Seems like it's a good week to be a lawyer, as everyone is hiring:

Special Counsel investigator Robert Muller hires 13 lawyers for his office and plans to hire more
VP Pence hires lawyer to deal with Russia probe inquiries
Trump's personal lawyer hires a lawyer for himself
"I hate him passionately", he's "a demonic force" - Tucker Carlson, in private, on Donald Trump
"Every line of serious work that I have written since 1936 has been written, directly or indirectly, against totalitarianism and for democratic socialism" - George Orwell
"[Capitalism] as it exists today is, in my opinion, the real source of evils. I am convinced there is only one way to eliminate these grave evils, namely through the establishment of a socialist economy" - Albert Einstein

So, was it fake news that he was under investigation?

Trump is right, If the guy who advised him to fire Comey is now investigating him for firing Comey -- how is that not a witch hunt? Rosenstein should recuse himself and fire Meuller. Rosenstein himself is involved in the situation and that is a conflict of interest.

Do we know that it is right? I have not heard anyone but Trump make that statement. I would not take his word for it.

rosenstein's memo shows that he advised trump to fire comey

"Although the President has the power to remove an FBI director, the decision should not be taken lightly. I agree with the nearly unanimous opinions of former Department officials. The way the Director handled the conclusion of the email investigation was wrong. As a result, the FBI is unlikely to regain public and congressional trust until it has a Director who understands the gravity of the mistakes and pledges never to repeat them. Having refused to admit his errors, the Director cannot be expected to implement the necessary corrective actions."

For one thing, Rosensteins memo was not the reason for Comey's firing, and thats according to Trump himself, "I was going to fire him anyway, as a matter of fact, I said to myself this whole Russia thing is nonsense." Then he told his Russian spy pals in the white House, "Hey guys, I got rid of Comey, that Russia thing was a real burden, thats taken off." So, since Rosensteins memo is not why Trump fired Comey, since Comey was fired because of the Russia investigation, Rosenstein has nothing to do with the firing. Unless Trump wants to change his mind again, and blame it on Rosensteins Memo. LOL.

Trump would not be in the trouble he's in if he had just left it at Rosenstein's initial report, but he didn't. He subsequently made it clear that the reason he fired Comey was over the Russian investigation whereby his own team was being investigated. Thus the matter evolved to obstruction of justice into the Russian matter and Rosenstein appointed Robert Mueller as a special counsel to investigate it.

It's in no way unreasonable to suggest the President was responding to the WaPo story.
