Not exactly a criminal mastermind, was he? Reminds me of a story I read once about a guy who went to a convenience store to rob it, but since there were customers around, he asked for an application instead and proceeded to fill it out while he waited for them to leave. When the customers eventually left, he pulled a gun, demanded the contents of the cash register, and then ran out the door, leaving behind the application which he had inexplicably filled out using his correct information.

It wouldn't surprise me in the least. One of my favorites, however, is the guy who called the cops because he paid the prostitute, and she didn't perform what they agreed on --- and part of the 'payment' was drugs. That was on an episode of "Cops", and was downright fun to watch the cop keep repeating the guy's complaint, to make sure he heard it right.

If the alleged diary was 'stolen', there's a crime. If, however, she left it in a room - no crime.
