Well, I do only have a Bachelor's degree, and I'm pretty sure my IQ is about 10 or 15 points lower than its peak around 35 years ago. Oh well. When I'm here, I'll behave, more or less, and on Facebook compensate by essentially using the F-word like a comma. If that drives some people away, so much the better. Their the type of stodgy stuck-up blue-noses I'd rather not associate with anyway.

I do think it's a shame that, in the popular mind, freedom of speech has become associated with such things as profanity and pornography when originally, it was a radical idea because of the potential for politically/religiously controversial speech; which I think is much more important to defend.
also we allow children as young as 14 to join tweb (with parental permission) and we ARE a Christian run site, so not using profanity is not a limit on free speech, but actually trying to be polite and civilized. We are basically "PG" rated.

Do you talk like that in front of your grandma? Or at church? Why not?

My grandparents are dead. Depending on one's view of how aware the departed are of life here on earth, yes, I do.

Many church associates are among my Facebook friends.

In general, this is my practice: On my own "wall" or whatever FB calls it now, I say whatever I wish, including using profane language. I know that this will at times show up in the "Feed" of people who don't like it, and I don't care. I've told them they are free to block me, unfollow me, unfriend me, whatever, and I will not be at all offended. I do not use such language on THEIR walls. If one of them joins a conversation where such language is already in use, I stop using it once they join, even on my own wall.

I follow more or less the same practice IRL.

            Ephesians 5:4
Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving.

            Colossians 3:8
But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth.
Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong.

              Yeah. Basically, I don't care.

In more detail, I believe the only thing remotely resembling a universal "rule" for proper Xian behavior is "Treat others as you wish others to treat you."

In all honesty, that sounds like a tickle-my-ear form of Christianity to me.

I think it is our duty as Christians to not be crude and profane. We are supposed to be representatives of Christ, ambassadors to the world. Going around cussing and acting like a juvenile punk doesn't make Christ look all that good.

I am not saying you have to be Ned Flanders by a long shot.

But profanity usually just makes people cringe and if you can't find a better way to express yourself, you need to increase your vocabulary.

You said the same thing to me in the other thread. Frankly, I don't know anybody that doesn't cuss at all. So I don't know where you get the idea that people 'cringe' when they hear profanity.

FYI: my vocabulary is a lot deeper than most peoples.

That's really funny coming from a site that has zero rules against trolling - with some of the worst cases of it I've seen on the internet.

I will cuss a bit sometimes, especially if upset, but I TRY not to. Would you cuss in a business meeting? A court room? a church? Any place where civilized behavior is expected?

Why is it expected for you not to cuss in such places? And why do you comply?

Haven't gotten that far - though my Dad and grandpa's did.

                          A court room?
                          I don't talk in courts.

                          a church?
                          Seriously?

Nope, and if they don't like it, then that's too bad.

                          I don't.

Some of the worst cases of trolling you've seen on the internet? You've been either very lucky, or very wise, to having been able to avoid the worst cesspools of the internet for this long. The trolling that I've encountered here on TWeb is quite tame compared to what I would consider the worst cases that I've seen on the internet.

I hope this is just hyperbole, cause you might not have seen much of the internet if you think this forum has some of the worst cases that you've seen.

                                from the Decorum:

                                Disruption
Disruptive behavior will be moderated at our discretion. There may be certain instances when behavior or comments which are technically allowable will be censored if they are used to such a degree or are of such a nature that they are unnecessarily disruptive and cease to contribute to or assist in meaningful dialog. Behavior which becomes, or can be, disruptive, such as but not limited to, gratuitous name-calling, bullying, stalking, abusive/threatening language, trolling, or blatant rudeness for its own sake, will not be tolerated. Threads which become disruptive may be edited, closed, or moved to the Psychotherapy Ward where said rules are more relaxed within limits. We also ask that any personal issue with another member be taken up in the Psychotherapy Room or privately as well.

We try to moderate lightly so we do allow some name calling and trolling. But when it becomes obsessive or profane (in the case of language) we step in. In my opinion "trolling" is just trying to get a reaction from someone, and something everyone does from time to time, so we allow a certain amount of it. (that is what me mean "at our discretion") If someone just goes into threads to troll and contributes nothing to the thread other than disrupting it, then we will ask them to stop or leave the thread.
