Apologetics 301 Guidelines
If you think this is the area where you tell everyone you are sorry for eating their lunch out of the fridge, it probably isn't the place for you
This forum is open discussion between atheists and all theists to defend and debate their views on religion or non-religion. Please respect that this is a Christian-owned forum and refrain from gratuitous blasphemy. VERY wide leeway is given in range of expression and allowable behavior as compared to other areas of the forum, and moderation is not overly involved unless necessary. Please keep this in mind. Atheists who wish to interact with theists in a way that does not seek to undermine theistic faith may participate in the World Religions Department. Non-debate question and answers and mild and less confrontational discussions can take place in General Theistics.

The ultimate weakness of violence is that it is a descending spiral begetting the very thing it seeks to destroy...returning violence for violence multiplies violence, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. Martin Luther King

Perhaps the end-times so long anticipated is actually the end of Christianity? I doubt that will happen in my lifetime, and I suspect every existing religion will always have some adherents. After all, we still have flat-earthers and young-earthers. We also have those who worship the Greek, Roman, and Egyptian gods. I suspect every belief ever conceived exists somewhere on Earth today. The ultimate weakness of violence is that it is a descending spiral begetting the very thing it seeks to destroy...returning violence for violence multiplies violence, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. My view reflects the Baha'i Faith where we do indeed physically and spiritually evolve, and yes give up ancient mythology and beliefs in God that are no longer relevant to the contemporary world. I pretty much concluded personally that either humanity spiritually evolves universally through Revelation, or as carpedm9587 believes we evolve to give up the God(s) that do not exist.Last edited by shunyadragon; 06-26-2018, 05:46 PM.

Yeah, this one wasn't so hot. If the god notion of god has always been a god of the gaps, then the idea that such a god would be less relevant/necessary follows pretty naturally. The speakers were clear that they were not debating the existence of god, merely the necessity of god in the face of growing knowledge and understanding of our world and our societies. I was fascinated because it is essentially my experience, and my observation of the pattern of history. It also explains the surge of secularism and the retrenchment of religions. "Nones" are now the fastest growing population segment (from a religious perspective)."The man from the yacht thought he was the first to find England; I thought I was the first to find Europe. I did try to found a heresy of my own; and when I had put the last touches to it, I discovered that it was orthodoxy."

That much I know. But it is my impression that "god of the gaps" was the very foundation of theistic beliefs, so there are still widespread vestiges of these roots.
An example is the argument from first causes. At the end of the day, we really cannot say anything about what lies "before" or "outside" the known universe, because our knowledge of "how stuff works" is necessarily limited to what lies within the universe. We don't even know if the words "before" and "outside" have any meaning in that context. Yet it does not stop people from using these arguments as a basis for postulating the existence of god. That is either a very poor form of argumentation, or it is an appeal to the "god of the gaps." (i.e., we do not know any other explanation, so god must have done it).The ultimate weakness of violence is that it is a descending spiral begetting the very thing it seeks to destroy...returning violence for violence multiplies violence, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars.
