Apologetics 301 Guidelines

If you think this is the area where you tell everyone you are sorry for eating their lunch out of the fridge, it probably isn't the place for you

This forum is open discussion between atheists and all theists to defend and debate their views on religion or non-religion. Please respect that this is a Christian-owned forum and refrain from gratuitous blasphemy. VERY wide leeway is given in range of expression and allowable behavior as compared to other areas of the forum, and moderation is not overly involved unless necessary. Please keep this in mind. Atheists who wish to interact with theists in a way that does not seek to undermine theistic faith may participate in the World Religions Department. Non-debate question and answers and mild and less confrontational discussions can take place in General Theistics.

    My emphasis.

    I missed this.

From where did you get that idea?

I was particularly referring to this section of your remark "about 100 years before Pharisees were thought of".

The general view is that the Pharisees and Saducees originated during the Hasmonean period (second century BCE). None of the works that I had seen admitted to any dissent: however, further checking reveals that there is dissent (it should have been no surprise really)

The Maccabean movement had its roots in the Hasidim [the ancestors of the Pharisees] which stood for strict observance of the Law in all particulars.

Of course as with any religion the various Judaisms developed in those centuries of the Second Temple period.

FWIU, scholarly opinion is divided. For instance:

              Abstract
The Hasideans are only mentioned only three times in the books of 1 and 2 Maccabees. As a result, they have been the object of much scholarly speculation. This thesis is an attempt to trace the historical dialogue among scholars regarding the identity of the Hasideans. Two questions are asked, specifically, “Who were the Hasideans?” and “What became of them?” Some have argued that the Hasideans were the predecessors of the Pharisees, basing this specifically on the attitudes and behaviors attributed to the Hasideans and similar behaviors attributed to the Pharisees. Others have proposed that the Hasideans were the predecessors to the Essenes, based both on different interpretations of textual evidence, as well as comparisons with the discoveries made at the Qumran site in 1947

The territory of Gadara included the south-eastern corner of the Sea of Galilee (Gennesaret). Severe drought during the years 1988 to 1991 resulted in markedly reduced water levels in the Sea of Galilee, which resulted in ancient harbour ruins being exposed. Among them was the harbour serving Gadara.
