CARACAS, April 30 (Reuters) - Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido on Tuesday called for a military uprising to oust President Nicolas Maduro and armed factions exchanged gunfire outside a Caracas air base as the country hit a new crisis point after years of political and economic chaos.

Several dozen armed men in military uniform accompanying Guaido clashed with soldiers supporting Maduro at a protest outside the La Carlota air base, Reuters witnesses said, but the incident fizzled out and did not appear to be part of an immediate attempt by the opposition to take power by force.

Guaido, in a video posted on Twitter earlier on Tuesday, said he had begun the "final phase" of his campaign to topple Maduro, calling on Venezuelans and the military to back him.

Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino called the latest instability a "coup movement" but several hours after Guaido's announcement there was no sign of any other military activity and there were no immediate reports of casualties. Guaido later left a rally he was holding with military supporters at the air base.

Maduro said he had spoken with military leaders and that they had shown him "their total loyalty." "Nerves of steel!" Maduro wrote on Twitter. "I call for maximum popular mobilization to assure the victory of peace. We will win!"

The move was Guaido's boldest effort yet to convince the military to rise up against Maduro. If it fails, it could be seen as evidence that he lacks the support he says he has. It might also encourage the authorities, which have already stripped him of parliamentary immunity and opened multiple investigations into him, to arrest him.

The United States is among some 50 countries that recognize Guaido as Venezuela's president, and has imposed sanctions to try to dislodge Maduro who they say won re-election last year through fraud.

Oil prices topped $73, partly driven higher by the uncertainty in Venezuela, an OPEC member whose oil exports have been hit by U.S. sanctions and an economic crisis.

A former U.S. official said that while it was unclear whether Guaido's efforts would touch off a broader military uprising against Maduro, it appeared aimed at building momentum toward May Day Street protests planned for Wednesday and making them a turning point.
The first to state his case seems right until another comes and cross-examines him.

I hope this doesn't get ugly, I read somewhere that Cuba and Russia have troops on the ground.

Maybe with the people predominantly supporting Maduro ... and sort of the the balance of Russia and China in opposition to each other ... the country may ironically be in a stable condition.

A formula for a prolonged civil war. Just the sort of stability everyone dreams of.

how does a majority support for its elected president lead to civil war?

When I ask that, I have to discount the coup happening in our country.

Where are you getting that a majority of the people support Maduro? They like being treated like slaved and starved? How does that work?

I've watched various youtube videos on the Venezuela situation. The main supermarket problems are effects of US sanctions rather than internal problems in Venezuela.

The primary source of such videos has been the Florida Maquis channel. The lower class people support Maduro. Their constitution recognizes oil as a resource to benefit all the people -- not just foreign organizations. Also, projects were done to improve communities. It is the upper class, who are all well-fed and nicely dressed (as seen in the videos), who are protesting against the government -- and it is not yet clear from the videos why. I don't think there is the problem of taxation to redistribute wealth, like in the States. There does not appear to be a brutal dictatorship nor a revolution overtaking the rich.

Overall, the news from alternative sources seems to present more coherent information than other media.

In all honesty I was less than impressed with your YouTube sources when you cited them as saying that the Christians in Venezuela are aligned with the Marudo and his allies. I think it was the same thread where starlight kept insisting that it was a lie and false propaganda that the Venezuelan government was blockading a bridge so as to keep relief supplies coming into the country.

How are these poor people who support Maduro affording computers and wifi and phones/cameras to make videos and post them on youtube?
Sounds like propogana videos to me.

                    Got any links?

                    ETA:

Is this the Florida Maquis channel you are talking about?

                      Several issues seem relevant.
                      1. Common disregard of role of US Sanctions on the troubles in Venezuela.
                      2. Stereotypical shoehorning the story into that of "dictator starves the people and we must save them"
                      3. Pretty typical situation that the US is interested in saving the people who just happen to have rich resources
                      4. Concerns that the election was rigged against Guaido even though he didn't run as a candidate

                        1. When another country or their people ask us for help we help. Not to mention their problems have been becoming our problems with all of the immigrants heading north. It is also in our interest to have countries that align with our political views and not with Cuba or Russia.
                        2. You know why stereotypes are stereotypes? Because they are usually based on what is most commonly true.
                        3. So?
                        4. Pretty sure the whole Maduro election was fixed from beginning to end. Just like the constitutional amendment that allowed him to have total power. This was a coup. And the people suffer.
