But now that they set that standard only a few months ago (whether it was used as an excuse or not), how can they now allow Joyless Behar to continue co-hosting The View? After all, she wore blackface and boasted about it (calling herself "cute") whereas Kelly only talked about it.

    • Fancy dress like that is used ironically. It is nothing to be alarmed about.

Yet the left has jumped all over Northram for it. Megyn Kelly was fired for "defending" it.

Well, no. It WAS NOT slavery.

Though the history of blacks in Virginia begins in 1619, the transition of status from indentured servant to lifelong slave was a gradual process. Some historians believe that some of the first blacks who arrived in Virginia were already slaves, while others say they were taken into the colony as indentured servants. Historians generally believe slavery in the English colonies in North America did not begin as an institution until the 1660s

First you say it was not slavery, then you say that some historians believe that it was. In my understanding, slavery in the New World started with the indigenous population, and only shifted to blacks as the native population became too low to sustain the needed work. I am unclear on how blacks could have become indentured servants; could you point me toward some relevant primary or secondary sources?

                              https://www.ferris.edu/jimcrow/timeline/slavery.htm

                              1640 July 9
When three runaway indentured servants were captured, the General Court of Colonial Virginia gave the white servants additional years to serve while John Punch, a black man, was sentenced to servitude for life. Punch was the first African in Virginia to be enslaved for life.
                              1641
Massachusetts became the first North American colony to recognize slavery

From what my daughter says she was taught in her Uni class on Colonial slavery and indentured servitude, some historians see no difference between the two given the nature of indentured servitude and the legal punishments for escaping before the debt was paid. Others see the difference as the ability to earn one's freedom versus lifetime mandated servitude.
