Actually, Charles gets the credit for explicitly pointing that out.

No, what I find most amusing is the implied premise that there were a bunch of racists in Florida planning to vote for a black candidate until DeSantis warned them off with a super-secret racist code word.

Either way, it sounds like he's politically naive to some degree. He either doesn't know the history of the word (so where has he been for the last several decades?), didn't think it through (like Clinton with "deplorables" and Romney with "the 47%"), or he actually did it intentionally to gain news cycles, trigger the "racist" claims from the left, and empower the right to start screaming "identity politics" and "liberals see racism everywhere," as is happening here.

None of these is a very good thing, IMO.

And did these images come from an opposing political candidate of George Bush, or from republican apologists like yourself who want to show that "see, you democrats do it to?"

I agree with those who claim he should have been more careful and talk like a grown up. But I don't see it as something that cannot be fixed.
As long as he doesn't do anything else like it to reinforce the idea he's a racist he will be ok. Heck, look at Trump. If he just follows that example he can muck it up again if he wants.

But as to why he would not do it, the use of the term would necessarily be indirect. And in context have dual meanings. It's not that it can't be what you say. And that is the point. No-one can know for sure and anyone can take it whichever way they want. That is what wink, wink, nod nod is all about. The wink, wink, nod nod is the signal that lets you know, why yes he did mean what you thought he might mean. And of course he is smart enough not to ever admit it if meant what he's being accused of meaning or to actually 'wink wink, nod nod".

It could have been one of those Freudian slips for that matter. He thinks of Gillium as a monkey privately and instead of "muck", Monkey comes out.

In the end we can never actually know for sure what he 'really' meant. That's how this sort of thing works. That is why he would have taken the risk IF he thought he needed to signal the racist part of the Trump base. Those that despise the politics of the left or are unwilling to vote left except in the most extreme circumstance will give him the benefit of the doubt. Those that are racist or partially racist will be solidly in his camp. Only those that already are in the left camp will be totally incensed, and they won't vote for him anyway.

And that is true regardless of whether he meant it or not.

To all of you who keep using "muck it up":

Muck is another word for mud, and black people and brown people have in the past been called mud-people, so you are a bunch of racist dog whistlers and you have been exposed. Repent now.

Sorry Sparko - no prize. To much indirection and not common usage in any group. Indeed, had DeSantis said "muck is up" instead of "Monkey it up", we'd have likely never heard about it.

I was merely doing the exact same thing. Trying to find something wrong with what you and the others said, even if I had to bend over backwards and twist into a knot to find some racist connection.

I just did. I'll be darned. Never heard it before. As best I can tell, it's pretty localized. I've lived in New Orleans, Philadelphia, New York, and Boston and this is the first I hear of it. I've certainly never heard it used in Vermont, and I just asked my boys and they scratched their heads. But then again, they were raised in one of the whitest states in the union, so you have to factor that in.
