Another factor seems to be that their unofficial propaganda arm, the MSM, inexplicably didn't really play along this time. For whatever reason they seemed to be a tad bit reluctant to carry their water as they had done every other shut down. Sure they dutifully blamed the Republicans but in at least some cases suggested that the Democrats might be culpable as well.
