  • The ultimate weakness of violence is that it is a descending spiral begetting the very thing it seeks to destroy...returning violence for violence multiplies violence, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. Martin Luther King

The word "atheist" comes from two root words: a - meaning "without" or "against" and "theos" meaning god. The word describes someone who believes that a god does not exist. It MIGHT accurately be used to describe someone who is against an existing god, but that is a non-conventional use of the term. So the sentence "21% of atheists believe in god" makes as much sense (to me) as "21% of Christians do not believe a god exists." Since the heart of Christianity lies in theism, the sentence makes no sense. I doubt most Christians would accept, "21% of Christians do not believe in the divinity of Jesus of Nazareth," though that might actually be true. But to not believe in a god at all is diametrically opposed to Christianity. Likewise, to believe in a god at all is diametrically opposed to atheism.

Anyone can call themselves anything they want. It does not mean they are using the words as they are conventionally defined.
Not quite. The meaning of "atheist" has varied over the centuries. "Without God" (18th century) to "without a god" mid 20th century to now, and also contemporary "without belief in a god." A person can believe in the existence of gods without taking notice of any of them, which is to say, that person is "without a god / atheist."

              • I get a kick when I visit somebody's home, and ask where they go to Church. They'll name a Church, and I'll smile and say, "oh, who's the pastor?" There's that deer-in-the-headlights stare... uh....uh.....

What makes it even more comical is when they name MY Church, and upon asking "who's the pastor", they name a guy who was there 25 years ago.

You just have to love language

OK - so I guess I should clarify that THIS atheist believes the idea of "gods" is a human construct, and that such a being (or beings) does not (or do not) have an independent existence. So I believe the universe is "without a god/gods."

And if I see someone erect a "Church of Atheism," I suspect I'll not be attending the services.

One of the first things that comes up if you type in "Atheist Church" is an attempt to correct to "an Atheist Church near me".

                            I find that very cromulent.

Oh my - that comes dangerously close to describing me

I do admire many of the teachings attributed to Jesus of Nazareth. Not sure I would call myself an "atheist Christian" though - but it does possibly explain the title that other member was apparently trying to claim.
