It's really easy to find claims of students chanting "Death to America" over in fringe newslandia, but it's a lot harder to find any video of it. I've got finals to grade. Anybody want to take up the chase to track this one down?

That wasn't a student protest or even a campus protest. It's a rally in front of the Henry Ford Centennial Library held by Al-Quds Committee Detroit.

Why is it being linked to student protestor actions at Columbia? Or is the expression of any protestors anywhere assignable to all protestors?

If so, we're going to have to talk about a lot of nasty and evil sentiments on multiple fronts.

So, you believe it has nothing whatsoever to do with the student protests?

What specific connection with the speaker, the rally attendees, or the Detroit committee are you suggesting exists to student protestors at Columbia or other campuses?

As suspected, the implicit argument was not that this event had any real ties to campus protestors but that campus protestors, because they share a broad point of grievance against Israel & USA's conduct toward Gazans, are inherently responsible for any statements of non-affiliated speakers and protestors.

We might as well say that pro-Israel protestors and rally-goers are responsible for people calling Gazans "vermin" and advocating a nuclear strike against civilians. Fortunately, not everyone is that cynically opportunistic.

So no readily accessible video of students chanting death to America. And in the only video that surfaces, the talking head clarifies they're speaking in Persian, saying "Marg bar Âmrikâ." Further, that the phrase translates to either Death to America or Down with America, depending on the source. The Iranian government uses the latter.

At the risk of looking a gift horse in the mouth, I wasn't looking for a horse. Thanks anyway.

This is looking more and more like the loony left's "Occupy Portland, etc...."

I have to wonder what would happen if a group of people staged the same sort of "counter-protest" that left wing supporters were using during the free speech rally's in California and Oregon were using?

Yeah, this crazy guy doesn't know what he's talking about....

Note - he's explaining what it means, and he clearly is saying "death to America", not "Down with America". I'm a little surprised intelligent people are fooled by that.
Naturally, he goes on to say he isn't talking about the American People - and I have no reason to doubt him on that, just as most of us have no problem with the Iranian People.

I seem to recall several threads regarding arrests in UK over anti-abortion protestors exercising their free speech* rights.

                                Are we still doing that?

*With the understanding that 1A rights don't apply to UK citizens and speech there is not as broadly protected as it is in USA.
