  • Hate filled extremist shot 23 people, killing five.

Hate speech and articles can cause hate filled tragedies such as this mass shooting.
Anderson Lee Aldrich is an example for all to see.

The people paying attention to extremism in America knew an attack like the one at Club Q was coming.
Experts who monitor the far right have watched for months as public aggression toward the LGBTQ community, in general, and the transgender population, in particular, has ramped up.
Drag shows across the country have for months, been targeted by far-right extremists including Proud Boys and white supremacists. Protests and violence at LGBTQ events have surged for at least the last two years.
At those street protests, extremists have been joined by everyday American conservatives – fueled, experts say, by right-wing media. The target of their outrage: previously obscure events ranging from drag shows to children’s book readings. One industry analysis concludes conservative media has become “obsessed” with drag shows in particular.

Shooter in Colorado gay nightclub attack pleads guilty, gets life in prison
A 23-year-old was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole after pleading guilty on Monday to killing five people in a 2022 mass shooting at a gay nightclub in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Anderson Lee Aldrich pleaded guilty in Colorado state court to five first-degree murder counts and 46 attempted murder counts, part of an agreement reached with prosecutors that avoided what could have been a lengthy trial. Aldrich also pleaded no contest to two counts of bias-motivated crimes.
On Nov. 19, 2022, Aldrich, wearing body armor and armed with a rifle and a handgun, opened fire at Club Q, an LGBTQ nightclub. Apart from those killed, nearly two dozen others were wounded by gunfire or otherwise injured before being stopped by "heroic" patrons. Aldrich, then 22, was charged with 323 criminal counts.

There doesn't seem to be any link between the "gender fluid" shooter, and extremist groups or extremism, right or left, in the write up about the Club Q shootings (see under the subheading "perpetrator"). He seems only to have been intent on killing whoever happened to be available.

"The people paying attention to extremism in America knew that an attack like the one at Club Q was coming."

The only surprise there is that the author seems to think (or at least, wants his audience to think) that extremist attacks were not a part of the societal landscape long before Club Q. Of course, the attacks were at least as likely to be left wing extremism as right, and just as deadly: but small details like that can be ignored in the interests of political points scoring.

For a moment I thought there was another shooting, but it's just eider stirring up old news. No one's going to defend shootings but people will certainly parade the dead for their political agenda.

They have to have something or someone to hate and/or fear. And as your first article notes this hysteria is being whipped up by the RW press.

Purely as a point of interest - consider the various threads on this board [just in the last three pages] vilifying transgender/gay issues in general..

Didn't the shooter here indentify as "gender fluid"? How come there can never be a perfect narrative?

Yeah, I'm concerned especially for the trans community. You can see how much the aggression and hostility has ramped up just watching these pages. And with the trans community the rhetoric is 'they are coming for your children' which has just enough truth in it to produce a mother bear and her cubs response.

That's making a lot of unsupported assertions without a whole lot of evidence behind it.

And it conveniently ignores that awkward fact that, as already noted, this guy identifies as being gender fluid or non-binary, who's preferred personal pronouns are they/them and goes by "Mx. Aldrich," so it is highly unlikely he got his ideas from right wing sources.
