US society currently (and historically other Western societies) is just insanely tolerant of evils that are done in the name of religion. As you note, if a person says "I want to hurt people in the following ways..." people respond "that's obviously harmful and you're bad for wanting to harm people", but if the first person says • Edited by a Moderator • told them that people should do it" (aka a 'religious reason') then the second person all too often says "oh, well that's okay then, I'm sorry for opposing your desire to harm others" rather than saying as they should "well the fact that you're a nutter makes it even worse". Americans are strangely obsessed with the idea that people should be allowed to do things that would be otherwise illegal, if the reason the person wants to do it is religious reasons. Instead of people rolling on the floor laughing at the stupidity of modern people following something some nutter thousands of years ago scribbled down, there is supposed to be some sort of extra-generous respect and tolerance given when people do horrible things in the name of their religious insanities, it's crazy.
