You think marketing ISN'T psychology? Is is. Very successful psychology that works in the real world. If you do have marketing hours in you psych degree, then you know this. Feeding a desire does not satisfy it. It drives it up. If you show booze to an alcoholic it, it makes him want it more. Even giving a single drink to an alcoholic can undo years of sobriety. You are probably thinking that reducing exposure to it over time will let them fight off the desire, like your mention of the nicotine patch, but it is not the same thing. You are actively feeding the desire by showing them images of the act. You are increasing their desire every time you show it to them, not satisfying it. The cigarette patch satisfies the desire by giving you a bit of it. It would be like letting them rape a child once a week, then once a month, then once a year. I know you aren't suggesting THAT! Showing them images of what they CAN'T have only makes them want it more. You need to change their desire, not feed it.

Look Jaecp, I understand that you were just tossing out a thought experiment. But at this point you should really have seen that it is not a good idea, and just admit that instead of trying to double down and stubbornly keep trying to promote it.

What I'm saying is that marketing is not counseling. Marketing is very frontal lobe and a dash of lizard brain to push people briefly one way or the other. Tee Ball. Counseling is the major leagues. The Newton to Einstein wasn't a joke, classical physics works great until you get very big or very small, something we didn't know until rather recently! Marketing principles aren't going to work at the counseling level because the tools of marketing are too limited.

Several participants in this thread have forever surrendered the right to criticize contemporary college students for being outraged at opposing views instead of engaging in intelligent debate. Don't you snowflakes know the real world doesn't care that you're offended?

There are certain ideas that simply do not need to be entertained because they are insane to rational people. Shooting people in the head to stop a headache. Drowning a baby to stop them crying. Giving child porn to a pedophile in the hopes it will curb pedophilia. In another time and in another place the very idea of a "thought experiment" that considers providing child porn to pedophiles would have likely gotten you tarred and feathered. It's only in this postmodern world where anything goes, and our culture is so sick that people think that this might be a viable option that needs to be workshopped and thrown around. It is insanity. It's evil. It's disgusting, and it's certainly not something that needs to be given a second thought by rational people. As a God-fearer, you should seriously reconsider your defence of those who are seriously proposing it.

There is no way you can integrate counseling and showing them virtual pedophilia acts and expect that to work. You are increasing their desire, then telling them that it is not good. Then increasing it again, repeat.

Maybe if you showed them ACTUAL videos of what happens to these children later in life, how their entire life was ruined by being attacked by a pedophile, showing them the consequences of their actions and desires and how they are ruining lives for a few moments of pleasure, and combined THAT with counseling, you might have something. Kinda like showing an alcoholic what happens to his family and children because of his drinking. How his drinking is ruining their lives, forever.

Of course if the pedophile is actually evil, then he might get off on ruining lives and that would not work either.

Maybe if you showed them ACTUAL videos of what happens to these children later in life, how their entire life was ruined by being attacked by a pedophile, showing them the consequences of their actions and desires and how they are ruining lives for a few moments of pleasure, and combined THAT with counseling, you might have something. It's not linear like that. Consider the example of a pedophile who when they desired to act on their urges did so through porn instead of a child. This person would have those tendencies Catholicity mentioned from the DSM, but wouldn't be what we call a pedophile because they had not hurt anyone, were trying to keep from doing this because they felt ashamed.

And about all that'd be liable to do is make the guy commit suicide because of more shame. Instead you could attempt a CBT based treatment program that uses exposure therapy with CGI to teach the person to control themselves and if they lose control to turn to porn instead of hurting a real human being. Particularly useful since the refractory period is enough time generally to build many of those walls back up.

Because this is something I just have examples for off the top of my head for things that I don't actually need to support because the research just isnt there. Studies involving pedophiles almost never get funded and if not for them then who is using porn to suppress sexual desires? Thats not a thing that would get studied hence we're in uncharted territory and, HENCE, thought experiment.
