Proposed California Split

Wish they would split my state. New York City skews the politics.

I used to live in Maine. It's still a backwater place.

Yeah, I figured it was still rather rural as far as I've heard from others, but it isn't too nice to insult places people are currently from (dead people don't tend to protest all that loudly, so you can pretty much say what you want about areas in the past).

That happens in every state with large cities; most of Pennsylvania is conservative, for example, but Pittsburgh and Philadelphia are overwhelmingly liberal.

That's the whole story. "Secession" is a turnip ghost. It was a possibility when people had enough local civic feeling to see themselves as citizens of states with their own interests, but the divide is not Red State Versus Blue State, its Red Country versus Blue Urbanites, or Producers versus Parasites.
