May I ask, what kind of sermon topics are typical at your church? What have you learned in the past month or so?

Christianity 201 Guidelines
orthodox Christians only.
Discussion on matters of general mainstream evangelical Christian theology that do not fit within Theology 201. Have some spiritual gifts ceased today? Is the KJV the only viable translation for the church today? In what sense are the books of the bible inspired and what are those books? Church government? Modern day prophets and apostles?
This forum is primarily for Christians to discuss matters of Christian doctrine, and is not the area for debate between atheists (or those opposing orthodox Christianity) and Christians. Inquiring atheists (or sincere seekers/doubters/unorthodox) seeking only Christian participation and having demonstrated a manner that does not seek to undermine the orthodox Christian faith of others are also welcome, but must seek Moderator permission first. When defining "Christian" or "orthodox" for purposes of this section, we mean persons holding to the core essentials of the historic Christian faith such as the Trinity, the Creatorship of God, the virgin birth, the bodily resurrection of Christ, the atonement, the future bodily return of Christ, the future bodily resurrection of the just and the unjust, and the final judgment. Persons not holding to these core doctrines are welcome to participate in the Comparative Religions section without restriction, in Theology 201 as regards to the nature of God and salvation with limited restrictions, and in Christology for issues surrounding the person of Christ and the Trinity. Atheists are welcome to discuss and debate these issues in the Apologetics 301 forum without such restrictions.
Additionally and rarely, there may be some topics or lines of discussion that within the Moderator's discretion fall so outside the bounds of mainstream orthodox doctrine (in general Christian circles or in the TheologyWeb community) or that deny certain core values that are the Christian convictions of forum leadership that may be more appropriately placed within Unorthodox Theology 201. NO personal offense should be taken by such discretionary decision for none is intended. While inerrancy is NOT considered a requirement for posting in this section, a general respect for the Bible text and a respect for the inerrantist position of others is requested.
The Tweb rules apply here like they do everywhere at Tweb, if you haven't read them, now would be a good time.

What Sermon Topics are Typical in Your Church?
Aragorn: What do you fear, my lady?
Eowyn: A cage. To stay behind bars until use and old age accept them and all chance of valor has gone beyond recall or desire.
Aragorn: You are a daughter of kings, a shield maiden of Rohan. I do not think that will be your fate.Tags: None

I think that a lot of pastors just don't read the Bible enough. And a lot of them instead focus on other, relatively useless things that the Bible says are supposed to be taken care of by deacons instead. One thing the above pastor advises is that a person should read the entire Bible all the way through at least ten times before becoming a pastor. I doubt many pastors comply with that requirement.

By sight, we look at the Cross and see a very cruel means of torture.
By faith, we look at the Cross and see redemption, hope, forgiveness, eternal life...
By sight, we look at our own lives and see failure, sin, hopelessness.
By faith, we look at our own lives and see ourselves presented faultless to the Father, wrapped in the Righteousness of Christ...The first to state his case seems right until another comes and cross-examines him.

Tonight, for example, we dealt with John 9, the man born blind to whom Jesus gave sight.
Only 8 verses deal with the miracle, then verses 9 through 41 deal with the 'fallout'.
It becomes obvious that the "blind man" saw a whole lot more clearly than the religious leaders who were the real "blind guys".The first to state his case seems right until another comes and cross-examines him.

I haven't attended church regularly in over a year. Got tired of the same exact formula in every church I attended. And the same messages. God has a plan for your life. God wants you to evangelize the lost. God wants you to tithe so we can pay for missions. That's what

*Mostly to refresh my memory on what I learned about Islam. I went through many sources both for and by Muslims, and sources against Islam to learn what I did. Answering Islam, and Answering Muslims are mostly good(for me anyway) to find stuff I had already learned, and for locating the original Islamic sources that those teachings are derived from. The Koran, Hadith, and Sirah literature are vast, and it's nice to have a place with links to those sources.

We offer our worship in song, and then spend usually an hour hearing a message. We support some worthy organizations, one of which is Samaritan's Purse. We have communion once a month. We are joyful knowing that we are being taught sound doctrine and not pap.

IOW, go to church, not just to hear a good sermon (however you define that) - but rather, go to church to see how you can feed and encourage others. Coming together is an integral part of our faith -- and your local church needs people just like you.
Hebrews 10:24-25
And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.Last edited by phat8594; 01-29-2016, 03:59 PM.

How long have you been attending church as a volitional adult?
How many churches (or denominations) have you been a member?
I know, sounds strange to ask, but I am curious, if you don't mind.Aragorn: What do you fear, my lady?
