What can one man with a hammer, a chisel, a mission, and 22 years of hard yakka achieve?

I can appreciate the sheer determination of Dashrath Manjhi and the underlying motivational content of your video clip.

However, that a man had to do that in order to get a decent road through to his village [and basic utilities like electricity] while his nation [a founding member of the UN] was working to make itself a nuclear power seems somewhat ironic. Despite its credentials with the UN and its non permanent membership of the Security Council India today still has so many living with no basic utilities, poor housing and sanitation, and often no education, yet the country pursues a rocket programme.

That seems [at least to me] to be going about things the wrong way.

I agree with the sentiment, but its kind of off topic for this thread.
I'm thinking that stories like this would be good reading material for nine and ten year olds as a more than normally relatable study of modern history, but your post raises the possibility that a similar series could be used in high schools as a spring board for considering social justice / human rights issues in a constructive way.

That is fair enough. My admiration for individuals like this is always tempered by my anger that they have to do such things.

Oh that could be a risky enterprise!

Challenging the status quo and pre[mis]conceptions always carries a risk. I daresay were such programmes suggested there would be outrage in some countries that "wokeness" had invaded the school curriculum along with questions as to whether this was just another version of CRT aimed at making white people [the Brits in particular] feel guilty.

Ah now - that makes the decision for the next entry in the Hall of Fame an easy choice: John Brown Gribble. Unfortunately, there are no photos of the gentleman, as far as I know.

My mistake - information has improved since the last time I looked.

I had to look him up! I see he came from Cornwall in England - a lovely county that I have visited a few times. However, Methodism was established in that county by the time he was born and the Non Conformist branch of Christianity had a powerful impact on fledgling social movements across England.

              Missionary.

Put his own safety at risk to oppose slavery of indigenous people in the far north of Western Australia, raising the ire of the government, his own church (he was an Anglican minister), the press, and servants of the law. He is honoured by aboriginals of Northern Queensland, where he served for only a short time until his death, after which he was succeeded by his son.

Something of a mixed bag - many of his claims can be legitimately disputed, but the exploitation and mistreatment of aboriginals, if not *technically* slavery, in Western Australia and the unconscionable treatment in Queensland cannot be denied. His activities in New South Wales, while well meaning, can be deemed "ill considered." There too, he faced threats to his safety from people who did not appreciate his activities on behalf of aboriginals.

Sugihara beyond doubt. One very gutsy player.
