I'm offended by that comment. Or is that off-ended. Not sure now....

We have become a cry baby nation.

The term "anchor baby" is meant to be offensive, just like "illegal aliens" - it is a term used to show disdain for a practice of using a loophole in the law and children to cheat the system. Since when do we have to bend over backwards to be unoffensive and polite to those who abuse our system and enter our country illegally, while those who want to immigrate to our country legally are refused access (Like Rational Gaze?)

Instead of kicking illegals out, we give them welfare, free schooling, and pats on the back.

I don't think "illegal alien" is deliberately offensive so much as it is an ojectively accurate description. Although I prefer the term "criminal immigrant" myself.

I think back to a part in one of George Carlin's routines about how we "soften" the language over time where he gave the example of the term "shell shocked" which was used in WWI and how it changed into "combat fatigue" in WWII then "operational exhaustion" after the Korean War and finally "post-traumatic stress disorder" after the Vietnam War

I'm always still in trouble again

So what's wrong with the Anchor Bible Commentaries??? OK, the commentary on the gospel of Mark by CS Mann, yes, that was indeed offensive, but this has since been rectified by Joel Marcus.

The idea runs deeper than a particular law ever will. That said, the law itself is perfectly clear on the subject of birthright citizenship so I'm not sure what benefit you derive from bringing it up.

Ironically it appears that both Marco Rubio and Bobby Jindal were born in the US to non-citizen immigrant parents, making them both 'anchor babies' insofar as that term has any meaning.

In another case this week of a conservative being absurdly offensive on the immigration front, we have Iowan conservative radio host Jan Mickelson advocating for the illegal immigrants to literally become slaves of the government. He has hosted Republican candidates Walker, Fiorina, Carson, Santorum, and Cruz on his show.
"I hate him passionately", he's "a demonic force" - Tucker Carlson, in private, on Donald Trump
"Every line of serious work that I have written since 1936 has been written, directly or indirectly, against totalitarianism and for democratic socialism" - George Orwell
"[Capitalism] as it exists today is, in my opinion, the real source of evils. I am convinced there is only one way to eliminate these grave evils, namely through the establishment of a socialist economy" - Albert Einstein

What is your point? I have no problems with legal immigrants.

We make it hard for those who legally want to immigrate while bending over backwards for those who come here illegally

It might be worthwhile for those resurrecting the Know-Nothing Party to describe the historic pattern and laws of immigration to America and define, in real terms, what form of "legal immigrants" they actually accept.

Because it sure doesn't look like the problem these folks have is with the simple legality of immigration but rather with the type of people immigrating. And that's a pretty transparent veil to hide behind. The folks washing up at Ellis Island back in the day weren't your H1B-visa types.

It'd be wrong to argue that the American Ideal is espoused fully on that plaque under the Statue of Liberty: the Know-Nothings have always been with us and nativism (ironically) runs as deep as inclusivism. But it's helpful to see where that line gets drawn and who ends up on either side of it.

So, it seems you agree with me that CS Mann's commentary on Mark is virtually useless in comparison with that of my friend, Joel Marcus. Glad to hear it!
