I agree with Jed, Obama has made comments from the pulpit regarding local issues like the Martin incident and the Ferguson incident, which I believe exacerbated the unrest and riots.

The only reason to explain why the tensions have manifested multifold during his admin in spite of his unabashed effort at being the champion of poor minorities. Though I believe his main intent at stoking tension was aimed at gun control (i.e. Trayvon, Charleston), and the racial tension that was already simmering around that was just an added benefit.

I highly doubt they would have been calmer and more reasonable if Obama had telegraphed to them that he's not on their side. It would just reinforce their view that the entire system hates them and give them even more incentive to riot. After all, if the first black president doesn't care, who does?

He could have simply ignored them like he does most similar cases that are not racially touchy.
