Donald Trump was once a Democrat. He was also an independent. He would be more likely to make that statement when belonging to another party.

The end of the ad shows the covid downturn and blames it on Trump. Geez.

Like I said, he was a wealthy celebrity mogul that flew around on private jets and attended private parties with other wealthy moguls, so naturally he's going to hear about how great things are doing from this class, as opposed to hearing about how the economy is doing from the under classes (in case you didn't notice there is a wealth gap that has been ongoing for at least two decades). So if he perceived that this class (the white collar wallstreet class) was doing great, then he would have assumed that represented the economy at large. So you could infer from that that the upper classes do great under Dems because that's who they cater to when it comes to economic policy.
So Trump is selfish and ill-informed? Quite the endorsement of this "man of the people." Why should anyone trust him to understand the plight of the bottom 98% of Americans?

Yes, he used to be a pro-choice Democrat. What does that have to do with what he said? If you're saying he's was just lying back then how can we know he's not lying when he says things now? If anything he'd be more likely to lie now that he's actually a politician.

And the president takes the blame when things go bad, right or wrong. Ask Carter and (the ghost of) HWBush. Heck, ask (the ghost of) McCain why he lost so badly. No way W would have won a third term if such a thing had been possible.

At the time he may have been ill-informed (I'm not sure how old that clip is), but that would mean he wasn't being selfish if he was ill-informed. He most likely thought that if the wealthy classes were doing good, then everyone else was. A lot of folks base the health of the economy on how the wealthy class is doing. He wouldn't have been the first.

Trump still spends tons of time around that very same class of people. What leads you to believe he's in better touch with the bottom 98% now than he was back then? You've heard how often he brags about the stock market and 401ks in his stump speeches. The vast majority of Americans have nothing or very little in the stock market.

And I disagree that being ill-informed absolves one of selfishness. Not stopping to think that the vast majority of Americans, or even the vast majority of his employees, weren't gifted advantages anything like the ones he received makes one self-centered and selfish. Surely you'd agree that the bible exhorts us to think of those less fortunate than we are, wouldn't you?

Yeah, he's definitely being a disingenuous jackass now bragging about the markets (and this was the complete opposite of what he was saying during the 2016 election), but that's Trump. I for one know for a fact he understands now how the economy works because he understands how the federal reserve policy affects it, and very FEW people understand how profound this is, and those that do typically aren't honest about it.

The question I asked was what leads you to believe that he now understands the lives of the bottom 98%. What does the federal reserve have to do with the lives of people who, today, cannot put food on the table? What does the federal reserve have to do with people who have to ration their medication because it is too expensive? What does the federal reserve have to do with usurious student loans and payday loan traps? What leads you to believe that his supposed understanding of the federal reserve (citation needed) means he understands the real world problems affecting those with less than he has?

People, tonight, have skipped a meal so their kids could eat. People, tonight, have told their kids there was nothing to eat and just go to bed. People, tonight, have told their kids they are losing their house and moving across the country to move in with relatives. In the United States. None of those things have anything to do with the federal reserve.

It was your hypothesis that Republicans might create a smaller number of higher quality jobs. It was your hypothesis that Trump's words were being misrepresented by being torn out of context.

Without the federal reverse buying government treasuries by the trillions and keeping interest rates low, there would be no way to fund all these crazy multi-trillion dollar bail-outs and folks would suffer even more. Where do you think the money comes from for all this? It would have literally been Mad Max if that didn't happen. I'm not arguing the morality of this or whether it's right or wrong or sound policy, just that it is what it is. Trump understands the complexities of this (which is why he was berating Powell about interest rates and QE), and very few folks do, including you obviously, therefore he understands economics better than most.

Yep, Context is important, like most of the drop in unemployment and economic recover from the Bush depression happened under Obama. The graph in this reference is very factual and revealing. It demonstrate that most of the drop in unemployment for whites, Blacks, Latinos and Asians occurred under Obama's watch.

It wasn't a hypothesis, you doofus. I was simply illustrating that "jobs created" is a meaningless statistic in and of itself. But since you're obviously not interested in defending the video you posted, I probably won't have much else to say in this thread.

Sean, I asked a very simple question: given that Trump was totally out of touch in 2004, what leads you to believe that he now understands the plight of the bottom 98%? Why does understanding the federal reserve, something relatively few understand, help one understand the plight of people facing food insecurity? Why does it help one understand being one paycheck from homelessness? How can understanding something like that possibly compensate for living a life full of wealth and excess?

You can't be serious. Trump seems to think that "jobs created" is a quite meaningful number if you caught his stump speech yesterday. Kushner seems to think the employment rate is a quite meaningful number if you caught him embarrassing himself on Fox today. It's the number reported by the government and on the news constantly. Since when has jobs created not been a meaningful metric?
