Discuss what's actually in the paper I cited (which may or may not be correct, I just found it interesting, and a topic we don't hear much about),

Do you realize this sort of response is the same sort of attack for which you've been so critical?

I hope to have time to talk more in depth about that paper in a day or so.

Psst! Privileged, not priviledged. It's not on a ledge.

Privilege is not condemned, failing to have self-awareness when you talk to those without it, is.

I've long been of the opinion that the scientific institutes should be doing ten times as much outreach. There's still too much ivory tower mentality going on.

                          I agree.

Currently there is a significant problem with incentives. These tend to range from very strongly negative (e.g. non-disclosure agreements or contracts demanding the scientists don't talk publicly about -anything remotely related to what they are doing), through to a complete lack of incentive (e.g. the scientist has a full time job doing science, and that doesn't leave time for / include public outreach). There needs to be more positive incentives for the more competent public speakers among scientists to communicate more with the general public.

There is also a tendency among scientists to be somewhat fearful of overstating their certainty about something in case a colleague who knows more than they do embarrasses them by shooting them down, which tends to lead to a great deal of hedging (along the lines of "it's my understanding that...", "I've heard that...", "This isn't my exact field of research but..."), which isn't ideal when communicating with the general public rather than speaking to a scientific audience at a conference. I've never seen any sort of course for teaching scientists how to communicate with the public.

                          • I've never seen a person who was working as a scientist condemned for doing some public outreach.

I've seen a few people who are obviously not scientists in any meaningful way, shape, or form, pretend to ascribe to themselves that label in order to lend their own non-science work some form of credibility.
