This reminds me of police officers who claim they can tell when someone is lying when, in fact, they're not any better at it than the average person, and in some cases are actually worse because they just "know" the suspect is guilty, so naturally, they can "tell" he's lying when he proclaims his innocence.

To be fair, I thought it was smirk at first, too, but after learning more about the incident and seeing the video, what I see now is an uncomfortable smile. Frankly, he showed far more restraint than I would have at his age.

It still looks like a smirk to me, and his interview did little/nothing to alter that perspective.

Yes, it's possible he was "lying." It's also possible he was engaging in fairly common self-aggrandizement and left out his usual "disclaimer."

Wow. The guy repeatedly gives the impression - even stating it as FACT - that he served in Nam, and he did not.

FACT - he claimed to have been a recon ranger "in country". He stated alleged FACTS about such. Voluntarily. Repeatedly.
FACT - he was never there, was never a recon ranger.

These two FACTS are irreconcilable. His entire adult life is a lie.

In that one particular viral image, it looks like a facecrime to me, also. Other images from different angles and different times during the incident do not. I do not have telepathic powers even in person, let alone via recorded image, so I can't know whether there is an actual thoughtcrime betrayed by the apparent facecrime. There could be such (i.e. intent to mock). There could be a (possibly) lesser thoughtcrime (i.e. bemusement and amusement at the crazy old guy on the warpath). Or it could be as the alleged perpetrator of the facecrime claimed: It could be a benign nervous and confused smile in an attempt to be non-threatening.

Since we don't (yet) *actually* live in 1984-Land, who gives a flaming flatus if it actually *WAS* a "smirk"? It's the best the crazy old lying provocateur deserved.

So perhaps you have access to information I don't have? I have seen ONE place where he called himself a Vietnam-Vet. Every other place he has called himself a Vietnam-era or Vietnam-time vet. Both are true. They may be designed to mislead - but that would require me to read this man's mind.

However, if you have multiple times" that he called himself a "Vietnam Vet," I would like to see those.

BTW - there is now more video that shows Phillips talking about being "in theater." That constitutes at least two separate instances of an outright false statement about his Vietnam era experiences. Coupled with the misleading language (-era, -times), it seems clear t me now that his intention is to inflate his role with outright lies. Assuming the videos in question are genuine, Phillips has a history of lying about his military status.

There is no such position as a "recon ranger." The quote you are referencing is apparently the same one Sparko is taking out of context. The quote refers to his role at Standing Rock reservation. If you think otherwise, you need to explain the meaning of the last sentence f the quote in the context of the quote being about Vietnam. It doesn't really fit.

This is, IMO, an unjustified statement. The man is guilty of lying about one thing that I know of. I dislike it, especially since it concerns the military and undermines the honor of others who have truly served. But I dont leap to the assumption that, because a man does something wrong in one demonstrable area, it means "his entire adult life is a lie." Here is where I see many on the right (including you) painting with far too broad a brush.

No - I just go where the evidence leads me - and no further. The evidence I have now seen tells me Phillips lies about his military service. Until someone shows he lies as part of a broader pattern, what I see is one area where he seems to feel a need to be "bigger than he was." It's a lie. It's unacceptable. It's not "his entire life."

What I have said is the man lied about one part of his life. The evidence supports that conclusion.

CP, I spend as much time as I can researching the positions I hold - and I hold those positions until evidence that runs counter is offered. The evidence has to be back up, to the best of my ability. Until that happens - I stay with "I don't know."

I realize that bothers a lot of folks here, and they feel a need to toss around words like "hypocrite" and the like, but I'm not going to change that behavior just because people get rude about it. I go where the evidence takes me - no further - whatever your opinion of me might be.
