In a nutshell, many on the right find the hesitation of the media to air Trump's speech to be an indictment of their impartiality - affirming what the right has long said about the media (see MM's post below for a perfect example). For many on the left (and many moderates), giving a pathological liar a national microphone to spew yet more lies and misinformation is a travesty, and any media outlet dedicated to presenting the truth should be thinking twice.

I agree - it is a travesty - but we elected that travesty into office and I don't see that the media outlets should take it on themselves to treat him differently just because the man cannot get through a sentence (or at least a paragraph) without lying outright. Instead, they should be prepared to review the speech at the end with a panel comprising representatives from both sides to discuss the speech and shine a spotlight on the lies - and they should make it clear before the speech and immediately after the speech that this panel will occur. Meanwhile, I agree with Colbert's summary of the upcoming speech: tonight, you should turn to CBS to see B.S.

It's also somewhat ironic that the man who constantly labels any outlet except those parroting his lies as "false news" then needs their air time to spread his lies. I cannot wait until this vile man is shown the door...
I heard that the failing NYT fact-checked the POTUS speech in real time, and did not point out any errors. Does anyone know if that really happened?

I don't know that they did a real-time check. They do have a list of Trump's errors but it seems to be undergoing updates as I post.

WaPo also has an error list

Don't worry, the sky didn't fall - Trump didn't suddenly start spouting truth.

I am amazed how much Trump's base just parrots his language. The NYT is hardly failing. Their stock is soaring. Their stock was trading at $10.95 on 11/4/16 and has been mostly climbing since the election, peaking at $27.83 two years later (11/2/18). It is now trading at $23.40, losing value (with most other stocks) in the mayhem of December. They have also moved aggressively into the digital marketplace, leveraging the increased visibility digital media has received in the last two years. The Barron review suggests they could do even better if they upped their marketing game a bit.

BTW - the NYT fact-check is here.

                    Does that mean they failed?

I emphasized the rather important qualification. Both parties have actually voted to fund barriers in strategic locations. That does not translate to 700-900 miles of new wall made of "all concrete" (or even metal slats). That distance is roughly the equivalent of the entire California, Arizona, and New Mexico border combined. And with over 600 miles of border already fenced, the addition of 700-900 walls would be the equivalent of fencing off the entire Texas+New Mexico/Mexico border plus part of the Arizona border as well.

I would be willing to bet that, if Trump came forward with specifics about which lengths of the border needed to be fenced/walled off, they would have something to actually negotiate around and they would get somewhere. But Trump just calls for "a great big beautiful wall" and expects Congress to throw money at him to build it. Let's face it: Trump is playing to his base. Personally, I hope he keeps doing it. The majority of Americans (55 to 35%) blame Trump and Republicans for the shutdown. Might have something to do with Trump claiming he would "be proud to shut it down." As expected, Republicans overwhelmingly like Trump's stance and blame Dems. Dems overwhelmingly hate Trump's stance and blame Trump/Republicans. What Trump has to worry about is the moderates. With issue after issue, they are shifting away and regretting their 2016 choice. So I hope he keeps tripping on his own air hose, and playing to his base, incessantly until November 2020.

And it's pretty much time to drop the ridiculous notion that Mexico is going to be paying for anything. It just makes Trump look economically stupid.

ETA: One thing I should note, however. It appears I was wrong about the Dem leadership position concerning the wall. I was under the impression they were in favor of a barrier - just not an all-concrete wall. I said as much in several posts. Their response to the speech last night made it clear they are not looking to provide funding for any sort of barrier along the border. So my bad, Rogue - your description of the Dem position was more accurate than mine.

Source: Border Patrol official says Trump's proposed wall would be 'absolutely' helpful

A U.S. Border Patrol chief of law enforcement operations is expressing support for President Trump's proposed border wall, saying it would benefit agents.

"Absolutely," Brian Hastings told Hill.TV's Buck Sexton on "Rising" when asked if Border Patrol agents wanted a wall to be built.

Hastings's comments come as a caravan of Central American migrants makes its way to the U.S.-Mexico border.

"It's important to note that we have 2,000 arrests per day besides the caravan. That's everyday business right now for us. We're very busy. This caravan just adds another component or another challenge to what we do daily," he said.
