To be fair, by October, it was looking pretty bad - he may have just decided to quit trying. If memory serves, he put some effort in early, but Clinton was a really strong candidate and there were lingering issues that were a drag on the Republicans.

If you think about it, his conduct often mirrors his version of Trump -- the frequent use of superfluous degrading adjectives, the extreme stretching of the truth, the accusatory tone toward his perceived enemies, the pretending to be an expert on issues about which he presumably knows nothing..... I think the boy's in love! The real sign, of course, will be when he denies this.
