    • So I'm very curious. There have been a lot of posts about the "violence of the left." This violence appears to be coming from the right, but there doesn't seem to be a lot of outrage about that. Why the difference?
The ultimate weakness of violence is that it is a descending spiral begetting the very thing it seeks to destroy...returning violence for violence multiplies violence, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. Martin Luther King

"The Right" in France is not the same as "the right" in the US.

        • It seems like the "Yellow Vest" are more like the US "Occupy" movement than anything the US "Right" does...

          e

Basically, they've taken to rioting as a means of getting their demands - "lower taxes, higher salaries, freedom from gnawing financial fear, and a better life" - met. Another similarity to the Occupy movement appears to be that, when interviewed, individual Yellow Vests don't really seem to know what they're rioting for.

I think we discussed this earlier in this thread. These are more like libertarians than US conservatives. But I did say that what they are doing is wrong. Destroying your own city in protest is not only wrong, but incredibly stupid. I support their cause, but not their methods. They are no better than the antifa in the USA.

ETA actually looking back at the various stories and articles in this thread the Yellow Vests don't seem to be from any specific political party, it seems to be a non-partisan group made up of dissatisfied working class who's main commonality is tired of being trod on and they hate Macron.

              • Looting, clashes as Yellow Vests seek new momentum

Rioters looted and torched shops and businesses on the famed Champs-Elysees avenue in Paris on Saturday, on the 18th weekend of French Yellow Vests protests, characterised by a sharp increase in violence after weeks of dwindling turnout.

President Emmanuel Macron cut short a skiing trip in the Pyrenees to return to Paris for a crisis meeting, as hooded protesters went on the rampage in Paris, leaving a trail of destruction in the touristic heart of the city.

He vowed to take "strong decisions" to prevent further violence, following the emergency talks held at the interior ministry late Saturday.

"There are people today who try by all means... to damage the Republic by breaking, by destroying things at the risk of killing someone," Macron said.....

We need prayer for France. These violent protesters do not represent the general population of protesters. These violent ones likely are trying to give improper impressions about the whole movement -- trying to discredit even the peaceful yellow vest people.

Macron's statement is hypocritical. Macron has been destroying the Republic by not looking to the will of the people to have a strong nation, free of abusive taxes being endorsed by Macron.

The citizens have been injured by abusive police actions ... Specifically I have heard that the non-lethal weapons have caused loss of eyes on many people ... even being pursued when leaving the protest areas..

Many nations are facing similar issues of migration, taxes, and of doing imports instead of having manufacturing within one's own nation. The gas tax caused a problem for the middle class who often have to travel long distances to work in the big cities ... but can't afford to live in those cities. It is like the loss of middle class America -- which could result in riots here -- if our governments keep going wild making laws and taxes against the general population.

It does, indeed, seem to be a case of the more 'moderate' protesters getting tired of the battle and staying home, leaving the more militant of the bunch to 'represent' them. Again, this reminds me (in the current light) more of the "Occupy Movement" than a grassroots protest. But, for the reason stated.

                      • A real protest usually happens quickly then either dies out, or will come to some resolution. At this point this is just vandalism and people wanting to cause chaos. They have no end-game or list of demands, they just go around burning stuff like an evening sport or something. They seem to be like the Anti-fa nutjobs we have around here. They just show up and instigate problems.

Kinda reminds you of the "Occupy" movement, eh? Any excuse to riot and cause mayhem.

yeah, even the Antifa seem to have died down.
