Perhaps you're using an unnecessarily tight understanding of 'gift of tongues'.
The first to state his case seems right until another comes and cross-examines him.

I feel bad for the guy, I just think he was a bit daft. Religious fanaticism has a tendency to do that to people, like the daft belief in "the gift of tongues."

Well, no - unless you think he managed to communicate with them after all.

I've experienced the gift of tongues - albeit only one occasion - for the purpose for which I believe God intended it. It would have applied, in my opinion, to this situation.

I don't recall the Apostles having to speak in e.g. Japanese for the gift of tongues to work.

Well it could include speaking in a language that you were not familiar with. Like in Acts.

                      Pentecost.

Had any Japanese been present, they would have heard the Gospel in their own language.

(Though I personally don't believe the Apsotles were required to speak in other languages)

When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues[a] as the Spirit enabled them.5 Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. 6 When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken.

...which is to say, no communication at all. He was sorta stuck there once his assistants dropped him off. Keep straining, you might find something.

Agreed. Therefore Chau was counting on the gift of tongues, he wasn't required to speak in Xhosa.

Funny how that never happens publicly, except in the biblical fiction.

I can't say what he was counting on... haven't seen enough facts to validate that assumption on my part.

It seems reasonable to me, however, that he may have been expecting (or hoping) for the Holy Spirit to intervene in a way that would cause the islanders to understand his intent, if not his message.
