"If they apply for asylum, we're going to hold them until such time as their trial takes place. We're going to hold them, we're going to build tent cities, we're gonna build tents all over the place," he said in an interview on Monday.

Why would an asylum applicant have a "trial"? A hearing, perhaps, or a review, or maybe application processing - but a trial? That implies the speaker considers all asylum seekers to be criminals until proven otherwise - or that it is illegal to apply for asylum.

It's a colloquial way of saying a "hearing". He wasn't trying to be dead-on accurate with his terminology.

Atheism is the cult of death, the death of hope. The universe is doomed, you are doomed, the only thing that remains is to await your execution...

A "trial" is simply a procedure in which the facts are "tried" - Doesn't necessarily mean a criminal proceeding. But, yes, "hearing" would be a better word. They're Brits, after all.

"Trial" applied to people usually means "a formal examination of evidence by a judge, typically before a jury, in order to decide guilt in a case of criminal or civil proceedings." I'm fairly sure the asylum seekers aren't drugs or sheepdogs

Ok, I didn't realize we were playing "how pissy can we be".

The BBC - from whence comes your article. The FIRST "B" stands for British. They may have substituted a word, who knows.

            Got video?

Speaking of video... I love the part in the one in the article where Trump makes the claim that there are criminals in the caravan, so they absolutely prove that's not true by asking this guy....

            not a criminal.jpg

            That absolutely proves it!

Alas no. But in my experience the BBC would not substitute "trial" but not fix "gonna".

Well Roy, Mr. Nitpicker... since they all illegally entered Mexico and overran the border police, they are all indeed criminals now, aren't they?

Mexican authorities arrested two Hondurans who allegedly shot at federal police officers escorting the migrant caravan across the southern state of Chiapas. The attack follows shortly after government warnings about Molotov cocktail attacks around a second caravan near the border with Guatemala.
