She is thus socially tarred with the 'shame' of having him as her husband and is judged by people like you for it and thus is affected by it...

    ...just as I said.

It all strikes me as an extremely old fashioned / pretty pathetic view where the whole family shares a single 'reputation' which can be improved or worsen by individual members of the family but which affects all in the public eye. I kind of thought such views had been left behind centuries ago, but perhaps they are still kicking in conservative parts of the US.

Just because you think it is "old fashioned and pathetic" doesn't mean it doesn't happen Starlight. It is happening to Ford and her family too. It's not just a conservative thing.

    • Did you believe Grassley's propagandistic half-truths? If you read a few lines further down the transcript you'll see Senator Whitehouse's response to Grassley's statement that Senate Dems have asked the FBI for this and there's a difference between a criminal investigation and a general report of witness interviews that is relevant here.

His wife and daughter have to endure the stigma surrounding the accusations for the rest of their lives. There will never be any resolution to the accusations unless someone can prove something one way or the other, which is very unlikely. Which means the Kavanaugh's will be ostracized from a lot of society wherever they go, for years. His daughter will be teased in school about her rapist dad. They have already gotten threats from people. If he doesn't get the nomination, he will probably have to step down as a federal judge because of his ruined reputation. Which affects his whole family.
As if any of that has anything to do with the truth or falsity of the accusations.

I thought you'd worked in/with the police? Did you have this "well the alleged criminal doesn't want to answer questions, so let's all just not bother" attitude to crime then?

And the FBI have already said they can't do a criminal investigation of this. All they could do is provide a report of any interviews, which the Judicial Committee can do themselves.

No, the FBI didn't say that they can't investigate, that's just dumb. Providing a report is providing the results of an investigation which is exactly what they did when accusations were made during the Justice Thomas nomination hearings.

Jim, the FBI said they can't do a criminal investigation. There was no federal crime. They can only interview people and the committee already has everyone's statement and had the two principals right there to question them.

Every one who wants to work for federal government has a background check when they are considered for any position. The FBI questions people and looks into where the person has lived etc. Depending on the position being applied for, they may even look into where the applicant sneezed and why (ok a slight exaggeration). They don't do criminal investigations unless the accused was a federal employee AT THE TIME of the incident!

And Kavanaugh has had 6 FBI background investigations over his career.

                          • Wow, Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) is actually attacking Kavanaugh's judicial record, rather than his beer drinking or farting! Where was that YESTERDAY? (oh, spoke too soon - now he's talking about beer)

                            • Yeah I'm not warching. I'm still fuming and as I said before I have a very low opinion of those procedures anyway. I just hang around and pray for the victims (whoops - nominees).

In this situation you go find a more popular candidate. A politicised SCOTUS would be a disgrace to the USA.
