My take was that Republicans made a serious error by employing Mitchell. They obviously had a problem because their party has never appointed a woman to the judiciary committee in the history of the country, so they were going to be seen as a bunch of old men badgering a women if they questioned her themselves. But their solution was to choose to employ a sexual assault prosecutor (or "female assistant" as Mitch McConnell put it), who's professional job is to take the side of people like Professor Ford and prosecute people like Kavanaugh. So then, during the hearing, unsurprisingly it looked like Mitchell was increasingly siding with Professor Ford and finding her credible and Professor Ford was coming across as a credible witness (or "attractive" and "pleasing" as Republican Senator Orrin Hatch put it), whereas when Mitchell started questioning Kavanaugh she seemed to be zeroing in on him and started asking him about the calendar entry on 1 July that appears to be the date of the party that matches Ford's account. So Republicans panicked and pulled the plug on her questioning: At the start of the hearing they had stated that Mitchell would be the only Republican questioner of both witnesses and no Republican senators would be speaking, but then when they saw where Mitchell's questioning was going they abruptly decided to speak themselves instead and Mitchell never spoke again in the proceedings.

It would certainly be interesting to see an interview with Mitchell (if the Republicans are willing to let her do one - if they have an ounce of self-preservation they will ban her from speaking to the media if they can), and see an interviewer talk her through the aspects of the case she did and didn't find credible etc.

          "Kavanaugh is a sexual predator!"

          What they really proved:

          "Kavanaugh drinks beer!"

And then he didn't give a straight answer to the question of how many beers is too many. Then he had an "I'm not a puppet, you're the puppet! You're the puppet!" This Totally Isn't Projection moment where he angrily accused Senator Amy Klobuchar of having a drinking problem when she brought up the topic of his possible alcoholism. It seriously makes me wonder if he continues to have a serious drinking problem in the present day. That could explain his large debts in 2016. A couple of people on the internet I saw suggested his behavior during the hearings themselves today was somewhat drunk, but I'm no good judge of such matters, though his rather aggressive behavior today and bouts of crying could perhaps be explained by him having a few before the hearings. Him having a continuing struggle with alcoholism since his high-school days, and being in denial about it, is a possible explanation for why he refuses to admit to himself and others he had ever been 'blackout drunk' (even though his high-school acquaintances suggest he indeed often was) and perhaps as a result he really doesn't remember incidents such as the one Professor Ford describes due to his inebriation.

Really? So you do not find, within some Christian groups/sects/individuals, a vein of anger and vindictiveness? You do not see anger and vindictiveness in any of the posts by people with "Christian" under their avatar on this site? At no point, OBP, did I accuse ALL Christians of this. But it is pretty evidently present in some. The Westboro Baptist Church is a marvelous case in point. But wandering through these threads will reveal several here who fairly consistently post in that tenor.

If that's "platinum-level screwball material," to you, then perhaps you are not looking at it all that objectively, or you took my post as an absolute applying to all Christians (which it was not). I have shown several of the posts of which I speak to my wife, my sister, and others I consider to be fairly neutral in their views of Christians, or who claim Christianity for themselves - and they affirm my impression. And I don't "lead the witness." I simply say, "can you read this and tell me what you think?"

Unfortunately Mitchell's words are being conveyed here 4th hand via partisans who are motivated to misrepresent the words or quote them selectively. It would be informative to see Mitchell interviewed directly.

Plenty of people have fears of flying, and have to psychologically work themselves up to the task of taking the flight. I imagine it's an easier thing to do if you know there's a fun destination at the end of the flight (e.g. a holiday) as opposed to an traumatic experience (public testimony and cross-examination about the worst experience of your life).

CP, I said nothing about whether or not anyone denounced them. Some Christians DO denounce the "angry Christian." Some are "angry Christians" themselves. Some are silent. Westboro is most certainly on the extreme end of this angry vein. But they are not the only ones of that ilk. A quick look through these pages will find a LOT of vitriolic, sarcastic, angry posting. Yesterday I was driving through Birmingham on my way to a class and pulled up behind a car festooned with Christian bumper stickers. The newest one, covering several of the other Christian-themed bumper stickers, said "Proud member of the Angry Mob." This is the vein to which I am referring. To deny that it exists is as silly as for me to deny that there are a lot of atheists out there who are angry, militant, and more anti-theist than atheist.

Based on the reaction from OBP, MM, and you, I seem to have stepped on a sensitive nerve. I can understand MM, because he is one of those I see as chronically posting in this "angry" tenor and I identified him specifically. I'm not sure why this nerve is sensitive for you and OBP.

It also strikes me that we're on a tangent that has the potential for derailing the thread. Maybe this would be a good subject for a new thread. I have to run now. Perhaps I'll start one tomorrow.

"a sensitive nerve"? No, Carpe, you're just wrong, and I'm sharing my opinion. Stop assigning emotions to people based on your own "read" of them. This is what gets so annoying --- You read something and assign a motive or emotion to it, you show it to friends or family out of context, and - wha-lah! It's TRUE!

Stop being such a sensitive suzy.

How does flying several times a year make you a psychological expert on people with a fear of flying? Most people I know fly several times a year... that's not exactly an unusual thing.

                                Wat?
Seriously? So in your mind, a fear of flying, for all people, consistently manifests as the choice not to book flights of a particular length and over a particular ground substance? I'm suddenly reminded of why I usually don't reply to your posts. I have a fear of flying and I've taken many flights of the type you describe. I intend to fly across ocean next month to Australia, and while I'm looking forward to the destination I'm not looking forward to the flight. Your bizarre claims are just silly.
