Dem leader Joe Crowley loses primary

10-term Democratic incumbent Joe Crowley, generally viewed as the #4 Dem in congress and widely touted as a likely replacement for Nancy Pelosi as Speaker of the House, lost his primary today in NY.

The winner was Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a 28 yr old latina who had been endorsed by Bernie Sanders, and who is a member of the DSA (Democratic Socialists of America), and Our Revolution (a Bernie-founded group supporting progressive candidates), Justice Democrats (a progressive group whose candidates refuse corporate PAC money). It is an extremely safe Dem seat, so she will become a congresswoman in November.

Both DSA and Our Revolution have been having spectacular successes so far this year in the Democratic primaries, getting a large number of their candidates elected.

one of my cousins did. We were talking about a year ago and she is a democrat but said she thinks the liberals have gone too far with all of the riots and antifa and trying to destroy Christians. She said that she can no longer vote for them.

Trump had a recent rally in Minnesota where 9,000 people attended, and twice as many had to be turned away because the venue was full. According to people who know these things, 60% were Democrats and independents.

Declaring that the people are ready for some social and financial justice seemingly ignoring that was exactly what they had for eight years -- which led to the slowest economic recovery in living memory. Now along comes this evil Trump character, who the left claims hates minorities, and suddenly the jobless rate among blacks and Hispanics are at the lowest levels ever.

Yeah, they have to run left or right (D or R) to win the primaries, then center to win the general election. Don't see that happening.

Depending on the district, they don't have to run very close to the center to win. The woman winner in the OP, for example, can probably keep her message exactly the same and still walk away with a victory. It probably won't help the Democrats pick up many seats, however.
