This is probably Trump's true legacy of his Presidency. He has, now and forever, cemented the United States reputation as completely unreliable in international agreements, subject to any whimsical change after the next election cycle.

I see other bad actors on the international stage using this opportunity (they'd be stupid not to)- ergo Putin, Assad, Erdogan, Duterte etc will use this decision as justification to ignore treaties and agreements to further their own autocratic agenda (eg the, "What we're doing is no different than what America is doing" defense).

settle the case. The settlement was to pay back the $400 million with accrued interest (totaling $1.7 billion). This potentially saved the US ~$8 billion if the tribunal had given Iran the compensation it was seeking.

As Jim says, it was pretty much a win-win situation for the US, as they avoided penalties that could have amounted to $8 billion, and finally resolving the dispute put the Iranians in a good mood and they released some US hostages.

Yes, definitely satire, because otherwise you would have to be a moron to think that paying a $1.7 billion ransom to a terrorist state while brokering a worthless, one-sided, unenforceable treaty is a win for the US.

Yep. Obama attempted an end-run around the Constitution by calling it an "agreement" even though it was a treaty in all but name only, and shame on Congress for letting him get away with it, but maybe we should be thankful, because you're right to say that the US was never legally bound to uphold it which made it possible for Trump to get us out of that mess.

I think it's more that Obama belittled Trump at the National Correspondents Dinner. You could see the smoke coming out of his ears at the time. So regardless of the countries best interests Trump is doing his best to destroy Obama's legacy. That's the kind of vengeful character Trump is.

Trump was utterly enraged, and I think his hatred of Obama and desire to destroy everything Obama achieved largely comes from that evening (and it's also why Trump refuses to attend any White House correspondents dinners now). Perhaps you should open your ears and eyes and recognize that the majority republican congress was not going to work with the President on anything, leaving him little choice but to get things done in any way that he could. If some dip stick republican is then elected and decides to rip up those deals then that's the way it goes. The american people get what they deserve!

Let's look at some other facts...

So Obama flat-out admitted that the money was a ransom payment to a terrorist state. Also, he never told us the whole story.

No, Trump knows that the Correspondents Dinner is a roast, and, fascist autocrat that he is, he can't take criticism. Simple as that. And perhaps you didn't notice but nothing Obama did was exactly embraced by Republicans in general from the get go.

Plus getting out of the Paris and Iran agreements were major platforms of Trump's campaign, so it's stupid to suggest that this was a snap decision because Trump was grumpy about the correspondents dinner. Ironically, some on the left had previously attempted to drive a wedge between the President and his base by criticizing him for not making good on his promise sooner!
