I see it as a strong moral duty to defend the oppressed and stand up on the side of civil rights for minorities. If you so-called "Christians" here had ever read your bibles you'd know it's full of teachings to help the oppressed, outcasts, weak, etc, and that "love your neighbor" is particularly about helping such people.

I believe that it is morally right that our society equip every person with the ability to live a good and happy life and that we don't put unwarranted barriers in the way of that, or go around making life difficult for minority groups. In my lifetime, the civil rights issue of the day has been LGBT rights. If I had lived during the slavery era, I would have been outspoken in my condemnations of slavery. If I'd lived when women were trying to get rights, I'd be outspoken in their support. If I'd lived during the Jim Crow or Apartheid eras I'd be outspoken against those. But from the time I first reached an age of political awareness through to the present day, the major civil rights issue at the forefront of our society's discussion has been LGBT rights: civil unions, same sex marriages, anti-discrimination laws, transgender rights. So that is the issue I've focused on.

I stand with the oppressed and condemn the oppressors. It's that simple.

Many college courses, especially in the sciences, spend a lot of time explaining that what is taught in school is a simplification and reality is much more complex.

It was a running joke among my friends and I how often the high school teachers and then university lecturers in the sciences would say effectively "okay, in previous years when we told you X, we were telling a white lie for the purposes of simplifying, the reality is more complex, so here's a more complex model we're going to teach you now..."

I'm not that familiar with US course numbering, but if it's anything like course numbering over here, {subject} 101 would be a university introductory course aimed at first-year students enrolled in a 3-year or 4-year degree programme.
