You did notice California in there right? I think they might have had the most secessionist movements of any state when you include all the ones designed to partition the state into two or three separate states.

I wonder if Pennsyltucky can secede from the rest of the Commonwealth.

Why, in a Commonwealth, is wealth not so common?

California has many conservatives, and conservative areas in the state, and wouldn't you know it, that's where the secessionist movement came from.

Wouldn't you know it, there have been at least half a dozen or more different secessionist movements in Californication just in the 21st century alone.

There is always a secession movement going on in California, and it's usually about money. They've historically had the seventh largest economy in the world and would conceivably be quite capable of going in alone. California is also one of the biggest contributors to the federal budget and one of the last recipients for state projects.

But, in reality, it could never survive because of deep-seated political divisions, a lack of fresh water for its population and agriculture, and general mismanagement. Gee, it's why people are fleeing the state in droves!

I am curious about people's views on the idea of secession itself.

It seems to me that the US states could probably be sensibly split up into 3-5 separate countries, and the resulting countries would be happier as a result. But, I judge that the institutional inertia against such a split is so strong that it's just not going to happen. (e.g. there's no mechanism in the law & constitution to allow a split)

The most plausible initial secessions would seem to be Texas (maybe plus a few red states nearish it), or California (maybe plus a few blue states nearish it).
"I hate him passionately", he's "a demonic force" - Tucker Carlson, in private, on Donald Trump
"Every line of serious work that I have written since 1936 has been written, directly or indirectly, against totalitarianism and for democratic socialism" - George Orwell
"[Capitalism] as it exists today is, in my opinion, the real source of evils. I am convinced there is only one way to eliminate these grave evils, namely through the establishment of a socialist economy" - Albert Einstein

I'm not wild about the process of secession. I think merely the fact that it is being talked about again - and by additional states - shows the discontent with DC.

Would I love living in the Country of Texas? Oh, yeah!!!!! Do I think it will actually happen? I doubt it.

California is a different animal, though - there have been talks for quite some time about splitting it into 2 or 3 states.

Yeah it didn't go so well.

I think splitting the USA into several countries would be a stupid move, and the resultant countries would be weakened.

I remember at least one in recent years that was a scheme to get California two more Democrat Senators by dividing the state in two.

Which brings us back to the point I made that we should return to a small and limited federal government with the majority of the power resting in the hands of the states as defined in the Constitution. That would effectively accomplish what the secessionists want without dissolving the Union.

The supreme court decision regarding Abortion being a state's prerogative is a step in the right direction.

One of the most moderate decisions they could've ever made, and you saw how the left reacted even to that.
