Granted, Americans had a very poor choice last time around, and also granted its half the fault of their odd two party system.

However, with an actual choice between a Democrat & a Rebublican, a progressive should always hold their nose & vote against the Republican. When the stakes are so high you don't have the luxury of 'purity'. A vote for anyone else is a vote for the other guy.

That's their system- work to change it outside of election years by all means, but look what happens when you refuse to budge. You get a Trump.

Conservatives are much better at this than Progressives- you see it on here, many only voted for Trump for SCOTUS or against HC.

It's infuriating when people throw away their votes like this in such a system. It'll take years after a Trump presidency to undo some of the harm they've caused and get you back to where they started in 2016.

Then the Christian Fundamentalist 'Utopia' will be able to reign supreme and they can do all the important things like banning sex-ed, shipping all latinos back to Mexico, having wealthy people pay no taxes, letting the poor fend for themselves hunger-games style, teaching creationism rather than evolution in schools, and bombing any countries with Muslim or brown people in them that the US hasn't yet gotten around to attacking.
The irony is that even with Judge Gorsuch (and any others they may manage to get on the bench), it's not easy to overturn landmark cases as per both Wade v Wade and SSM. More likely than not they will both remain in force. So the loony Evangelicals may well have inflicted the degenerate Trump on the US and the rest of the world for no good reason at all.

Usually I would agree with that logic, and agree that voting for the more progressive option would be the good choice. This election was unusual.

I thought Hillary was particularly bad for a Democrat, and so having her lose could be a catalyst for change within the Democratic party and a clear message to them to do better in future. I thought Trump would be an epic failure of historic proportions which could catalyze true change within America as people responded to seeing how atrocious he was and shock the younger generation (who have a tendency to vote at lower rates, but vote progressive when they do vote) into taking more of an interest in politics and voting more in future.

At this stage I am cautiously optimistic that both these positive effects are going to come to pass. Democrats look like they'll up their game and then sweep the board in 2018 and will probably get super-majorities in 2020 like they did in 2008 post-Bush.

Of course it is entirely possible to argue that a Hillary presidency would have been better for America / the world nonetheless. That's hard to estimate, of course. She'd obviously have been hugely better on climate change and the EPA. But if she'd had a Republican dominated House and Senate like Trump does then they'd have probably blocked her Supreme Court pick like they did for Obama, agree to none of the legislation she wanted, and be trying to impeach her because of her emails and/or Benghazi. And House and Senate seats would have likely gone more to Republicans under Hillary's leadership because she's not a charismatic or inspiring politician and the Republicans would lose their minds screaming about fake Hillary scandals continually.

Indeed, and so far Gorsuch the extremist nutter has replaced Scalia the extremist nutter so the S.C. looks no different anyway.

Scalia was one of the best jurors to serve in the last century. Gorusch hasn't been there long enough to establish himself. But, if it's nutters you want, just look at the trifecta of women idiots that currently serve. All 3 are complete leftist hacks who make absolutely NO effort to hide that they have already made their minds up on cases, even before they are argued.

With a heaping side of wishful thinking, no doubt. The left still hasn't come to grips with the fact that Trump won. Yahoo front-paged an article touting a theorized military coup yesterday.

Scalia's qualities as a juror were matched only by Trump University's qualities as a university and Donald Trump's competence as a President. There's a good discussion here as to why Scalia was one of the three worst Supreme Court justices of all time.

Alan Singer's screed is a "good discussion" in your book??? A SOCIAL STUDIES professor??? All he did was whine why he didn't like Scalia's decisions. He never once addressed the actual LEGAL aspects of Scalia's decisions, only the social consequences. I saw nothing legally wrong with any of the decisions Singer bitched about. All I saw was a butthurt liberal whining that a Constitutionalist didn't agree with his severely jaded view of social situations.
