Legislation backed by then-President Bill Clinton, called the "Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996," states immigrants are "not eligible for any federal means-tested public benefit" for five years beginning when they come into the country. However, the law has exceptions and additional legislation since its passage has also affected eligibility.Atheism is the cult of death, the death of hope. However this will give the Trump supporters warm fuzzies at the thought of being nasty to immigrants, so it achieves its political purpose. They can sleep well at night comforted by warm thoughts of successfully causing immigrants to suffer by not being able to receive any government support they happen to need.
But given the Republicans don't seem to have been capable of actually passing any legislation so far even with control of all the branches of government, I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for Trump's regularly-given never-accomplished promises to actually turn into law if I were you."I hate him passionately", he's "a demonic force" - Tucker Carlson, in private, on Donald Trump

If Trump can get the legislation passed with no exceptions then that would be awesome. I suspect it would significantly curtail immigration if people know they can't come here and immediately start getting free money from taxpayers, and that would be a good thing. Some may call me foolish, and some may call me odd

It is a good idea, but I do think there needs to be exceptions. If we do take in refugees, we can't expect them to be up and running right away. We need to give them time to assimilate, learn the language and culture. Like what we did with the Vietnamese in the 1970s. I think that worked out great. The Vietnamese integrated in and were productive members of society pretty quickly. Very hard workers.

I find it funny that Starlight is commenting on this when his precious utopia is kicking a 5 year old immigrant out because she is a drain on their world famous free medical system...That's what

I'm not exactly sure what relevance you see in the recent news story about one person being declined immigration permission...? Since decisions continuously have to be made by immigration authorities with respect to different individual cases, and because there are so many different types of visas etc and paths to immigration, there are regular court challenges filed against immigration authority decisions by disappointed potential immigrants, and sometimes they go one way and sometimes another, it happens, and it's always a difficult process. Although I doubt it's nearly as bad as the US immigration process to try and get green cards which is legendary worldwide in its absurdity. While I support my preferred political party's recent policy suggestion of upping the refugee quotas that NZ takes, I doubt the girl in the particular news story you reference would have qualified as a refugee, although I have not been following that story closely.Last edited by Starlight; 06-22-2017, 09:21 AM."I hate him passionately", he's "a demonic force" - Tucker Carlson, in private, on Donald Trump

Originally posted by Starlight View PostAs I've been pretty clear on in the past, I would like to see my country significantly reduce the number of immigrants it is taking. The immigration rate here is currently the highest in the Western world and approximately double that of most of the rest Western world including the US, and I would like to see it cut in half to bring NZ into general line with the rest of the Western world. The incredibly high immigration rate has caused house prices to increase to absurdly high levels and caused problems with simply not being able to build enough new houses fast enough, so there generally seems to be agreement across the board that it would be a good idea to ease off the ultra-high immigration rates by a notch or two. Obviously that means making tough decisions about who's allowed in and who isn't.

He isn't the typical whacko on that point.Actually YOU put Trump in the White House. He wouldn't have gotten 1% of the vote if it wasn't for the widespread spiritual and cultural devastation caused by progressive policies. There's no "this country" left with your immigration policies, your "allies" are worthless and even more suicidal than you are and democracy is a sick joke that I hope nobody ever thinks about repeating when the current order collapses. - Darth_Executor striking a conciliatory note in Civics 101
