I actually remember in a science fiction story I wrote, there was an alien society that, to improve society, randomly distributed all children that were born to different families, with the idea that because you didn't know who your own kid was, you wanted to try to make things as good as possible for all children in order to benefit them. It didn't go too deep into it (it was just an off-hand mention in a larger story) but I did think it was interesting.

I'm sorry, this was supposed to be a science fiction story I read. Darn it, didn't notice the goof until just now, well after the time I could've edited it.
