My understanding is that they sorted the emails by time, sender, and recipient to arrive at only those emails between Clinton and Abedin during the time that Clinton was Secretary of State. They then used programming to eliminate duplicates that had already been reviewed previously in the investigation. Then they only had a much smaller number of 'new' emails to review manually.
