Billions? Try several trillions. A transition to renewable energy is better and cheaper, and at any rate inevitable. The coal industry, global warming or not, is dying. Are you against the subsidies being withdrawn, that is keeping the industry alive in various places?

As I've said before, I support coal for the poorest countries, who can easily transition to a coal power based industry, without having much impact on the net CO2 being sent out. Meanwhile the west and china can transition to a mixture of mostly solar power, with some wind. I also fully support the expanded use of nuclear power.

Yeah, neither do I. I find the older I get the less tolerance I have for anything highly charged like a lot of television drama where people get hurt. And they always start these hospital dramas with some horrific accident. I just go out of the room. It might be an age thing.

Until we can come up with something to replace it we still need energy produced from fossil fuels. It really boils down to that.

Solar power and wind can replace it, fifty times over.

Take the total footprint of a nuclear powerplant, safezone and all. Cover the same area with solar panels and in some cases the yearly production is the same.

Solar, in particular, has been the great success story of scientific research into renewables. Fusion power, and tidal power have progressed negligibly. Wind power is a bit so-so. Geothermal power, while often classed as renewable, generally isn't really renewable or carbon-free. Nuclear (fission) power has advanced a bit, but not a whole lot and remains expensive and designs for 'totally safe' fission plants remain largely untested. But solar:

It seems likely that soon it will be just plain cheaper to use solar power than any other kind.

Now, of course, there's problems trying to run 90% of a national grid off solar power, because its output fluctuates too much, and power storage technology has not seen the sort of revolutionary and dramatic improvements that solar cells have. But overall it really wouldn't surprise me if in 20 years, most new houses were built with solar panels on the roof as their primary source of power.

I should have remembered that I'm supposed to just sit still, and take the constant generalizing of liberal philosophy on this site - but never generalize conservatives.

The same folks who promote things like wind power are some of the first to cry NIMBY! Ted Kennedy was a great example. Moreover, both solar and wind power are only feasible in certain areas. Solar power, for instance, has serious limitations in places like the northwest coast of the U.S. where cloudy, rainy weather is the norm.

I've seen more than my share of real violence and as of yet fictional violence doesn't trouble me much.
