Well, insofar as any statements concerning gods are guesses, I suppose that's unavoidable. But your guesses are free to take the form of a self-consistent model. Perhaps you might argue that the god YOU imagine is so vast that the scope of the universe is no impediment to His concern for every molecule in it. Or perhaps you could argue that the primitive tribesmen of 2000 years ago had no clue about the nature of their universe, and their god did not see fit to give them one.

Approaches like that give me a clearer idea about the posture you take toward such matters, and the sort of god you worship.

Many countries in the developed world flourish without having to resort to the sort of hypocrisy you're advocating - including my country, Australia, where numerous members of parliament have publicly declared their non-belief - including one of the most popular and successful prime-ministers ever, namely Bob Hawke. Many of us believe that honesty is preferable to lying about one's beliefs - where does such dishonesty stop?
