I think the man was naïve, believing he could make Russians "happy" while denying them freedoms and elections. He loosened the reins and the horse ran away.

To tell the truth I was surprised to hear he was still alive all this time. I thought he had died long ago.

But I think he was ultimately a good guy who helped free his country from communism and broke up the soviet union. Until Putin took over and it became a totalitarian state instead.

But he didn't intend to break up the empire. He said he wanted to change socialism and give it a happy face (or some such slogan, I forget now). Even after the Soviet Union collapsed, he insisted he could have made it all work if he had the proper tools.

Overall, his presence and actions made the section of the world that he influenced a better place. It's more than can be said for most.

I'll give him that much. He wanted to make life better for his countrymen, and you can't fault him for that. He wasn't a maniacal tyrant like his predecessors.
