Apologetics 301 Guidelines

If you think this is the area where you tell everyone you are sorry for eating their lunch out of the fridge, it probably isn't the place for you

This forum is open discussion between atheists and all theists to defend and debate their views on religion or non-religion. Please respect that this is a Christian-owned forum and refrain from gratuitous blasphemy. VERY wide leeway is given in range of expression and allowable behavior as compared to other areas of the forum, and moderation is not overly involved unless necessary. Please keep this in mind. Atheists who wish to interact with theists in a way that does not seek to undermine theistic faith may participate in the World Religions Department. Non-debate question and answers and mild and less confrontational discussions can take place in General Theistics.

Genesis 1;1 stands against the myths.

The whole thing is mythical (and contradictory) in tone. In no way do the two creation variants in Genesis equate with reality.

You are arguing interpretation. At the very least the Genesis creation account is a didactic against those myths.

First of all there are many ex nihilo creation myths where a god either dreams, thinks, or, as in genisis, speaks the world into existence. Even the Genesis account doesn't make it clear that the biblical god created matter out of nothing, only that he gave to the existing chaos its form.

Btw even the the biblical Garden of Eden, spelled Edin, was borrowed from the Sumerian myth.

Odd response, and does not address the issue that the objective evidence demonstrates that the Genesis myth originated from Sumerian myths shared by the Canaanites, Ugarit, and the Babylonians.

Nonsense. The Genesis creation accounts arose out of the ancient creation myths of Sumer, which was the first literate civilisation of ancient Mesopotamia...long predating the Hebrews.

If you mean in opposition to them, I would agree.

                          He doesn't, and you're wrong.

Why should I believe that the authors of the Hebrew myths intended to oppose the earlier myths?

That's not what I meant, nor did I imply it. The Genesis creation narratives were simply a retelling of the far more ancient Mesopotamian creation myths by the Hebrews, who then adopted them as their own.

                                Refuted them.
